Born on October 21, 1943, with her fraternal twin brother Paul, to Freeda Marie Winstone and Alfred Lenzo McConkey in Hamburg, Iowa. She was the only surviving female from 3 sets of twins birthed by her mother. Her siblings included William, Paul, Larry, and James. Their father passed away in a farming accident when Phyllis & Paul were 15 months old.
Phyllis graduated in 1962 from Youngsville Highschool in Youngsville, PA. She was the first female to letter in a sport at the high school. Phyllis asked the school coach how to letter in a sport as they did not have any girls’ teams. The only sport available was bowling, which become a very important part of her life for 50+ years. After graduation, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. She attended basic training in Paris Island, SC. After boot camp, she served at Paris Island, SC and completed her military career at Camp Pendleton, CA as a Sargent. While in the Marine Corps, she met fellow marine Joseph C. Bourque, Jr. and they were married August 21, 1966, in Orange, CA. They made their home in Vista, CA where they raised two children, Joseph C. Bourque III and Audie T. Bourque. Phyllis graduated in 1977 from Palomar College with an associate in arts degree.
Through the sport of bowling, Phyllis traveled to numerous places and met many people. She was involved in WIBC & USBC, for over 50 years. She served as president for both local associations, president for North County YABA and as a State Director for CAYABA. Phyllis enjoyed coaching young people and many generations have been coached by “Sarge.” Phyllis met her goal of bowling in 50 consecutive USBC Championships in 2022. She collected donations every November for Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL). Phyllis was a proud Veteran and active in the Women Marines Association.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Joseph C. Bourque, Jr., her youngest son Audie T. Bourque, her parents Freeda Marie Winstone and Alfred Lenzo McConkey, and her brothers, John McConkey, William Durfey, James Durfey, Larry Reynolds, and her sister Linda McConkey. She is survived by her son Joseph C. Bourque III (Kimberly) of La Plata, MD, her grandchildren Joseph C. Bourque IV (Melissa) of Bluntville, TN, Sara Sines of NY, NY, and two great-grandchildren, Addilynn & Olivia Bourque.
The viewing will be held at Eternal Hills Chapel in Oceanside, CA on April 25, 2024, from 4pm-8pm. Funeral service and burial will be held at Eternal Hills on April 26, 2024, at 9:30am. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) www.bvl.org or to Leukemia Society www.givenow.lls.org. A memorial service will
be planned for a later date to be held at Pisgah United Methodist Church in Maryland, where she was a member.
