May 30, 1932 – June 25, 2024
92 years old
Sandra “Sandy” Hurwood Feingold was born on May 30th, 1932 in Rochester, New York.
As a child she moved to Clearwater, FL with her mother Bessie and her father Harry.
Sandy was a miracle from the very beginning, as Bessie was not supposed to be able to have children, thus Sandy grew up as an only child. As a child she enjoyed helping her Dad in his poultry market and going fishing.
Sandy later attended Clearwater high school and then went on to nursing school at Tuoro Infirmary at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, where she became a registered nurse (R.N.).Sandy always had a giving spirit and helped others. She began her nursing career in public health.
After college, some friends set Sandy up on a blind date with Bill Feingold from Philadelphia, PA. Bill was a chemistry student from Temple University. The rest is history…
Sandy and Bill married on August 20th, 1955. In 1958 they welcomed their first child, their son Keith. In 1961 their daughter Janice arrived, making the family complete (except for numerous pets along the way). Sandy was a stay at home Mom when the kids were small and was always the fun/ cool Mom. All the neighborhood kids flocked to the Feingold household because it was such a fun place to be. Although the family moved a lot due to Bill’s career, Sandy always made things feel safe for the family. She was involved in all the kids activities – Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Girls, swimming lessons, ice skating, baseball, softball and more. Pets were also always part of family life. Who can resist a sign for free puppies on the side of the road, she was a soft touch with a huge heart.
Sandy was always kind and supportive. She was extremely creative and artistic. Sandy was a great seamstress and taught sewing at a store called Stretch & Sew. She would later get into making cloth dolls and through her doll club became a published doll artist. She even had one of her dolls – a “Rosie the Riveter” doll selected to be displayed on one of the Christmas trees at the White House during the Clinton administration.
Sandy always made birthdays and other occasions celebrations to be remembered!
Everything from custom cakes, craft events, puppet shows and even haunted houses. Despite the family’s numerous moves (FL, CA, AZ and back to FL and CA), Sandy always made friends and connections easily for herself and the family. The family finally landed in Carlsbad, CA.
Sandy and Bill were married for 47 years until his passing in 2002. Sandy remained in San Diego, CA. In 2013 she downsized and moved into a senior community at Seacrest Village in Encinitas, CA and later to Belmont Village in Cardiff by the Sea, CA. As usual she made friends quickly and enjoyed outings, movies, lectures and BINGO!!!
Her friendly, fun, sense of humor and kindness were contagious and others were drawn to her upbeat personality. Sandy was also an awesome writer of stories, poetry and more. She had a great imagination and sense of wonder. She saw images in the clouds, loved the beach and loved music. Although, she’d be the first to admit that her singing voice left a little bit to be desired. Her rendition of the Happy Birthday song became memorable and a source of much levity over the years being capped off by her granddaughter at just a few years of age exclaiming - Turn it Off!
But, this never diminished her love of music. Up until her last days, you could find her tapping her feet and shimmying her shoulders to the music.
Even the staff at Belmont were deeply saddened by her sudden passing!
They all expressed how happy, joyful and kind Sandy was. She had a great smile and infectious energy up until the very end. The staff also espressed how happy she was on an outing, doing her shimmy dance and doing her pedaling with Suzanne her physical therapist the day before she passed. It is comforting to know that she had a great last day!!!
Sandy is survived by her daughter Janice, son Keith, daughter-in-law Caryn and grandchildren Chloe and Chad.
