Ted LaVert Sanborn, 71, of Oceanside, CA, passed away on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, very peacefully in his sleep with wife, Kristin, by his side. Ted was born August 28, 1947 in Washington, D.C, the son of Fern L. Hatfield and Don L. Sanborn. Ted graduated Oceanside High School in 1965. He enlisted in the Army March 1969 until January 1971 with the rank of E-4, SP4. In the Army, he was decorated with National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter M-14.
This world has lost a man with the biggest heart. Sometimes without realizing Ted was gruff in the tone of his voice and did not pull punches. He said it how it was and you always knew where you stood with him. Ted adored his wife and loved his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as his friend’s children. All nephews had the experience of fishing with Uncle Ted and being taken into the garage to view the baseball card and autographed baseball collection. While Jesse Miholich and Ryan Connolly were growing up, Ted afforded them the backing of the RC racing team “Team Cuz”.
Ted met Kristin at Calbiochem in La Jolla where Ted was a chemist. Ted and Kristin were married June, 30 1973 in the Catholic Church as that was Kristin’s religion. His childhood friend, Dan Meritt, was his best man. Ted went through the Church’s Pre-Cana as he knew it was important to Kristin and her parents. He tells the story that he agreed to all requests made through the Church for a mixed marriage. He went on to say that he requested that he did not have to kneel during the ceremony. During the ceremony, the Priest asked everyone to kneel, Ted did. Ted claims that “the Priest looked him straight in the eye and gave the blessing slowly and deliberately.”
Ted worked in Mortgage Banking for many years. First with Crocker Bank then First Banker’s Mortgage.
In July, 1976, Ted graduated from National University with the Degree Bachelor of Business Administration, Summa Cum Laude.
After his career in Mortgage Banking, he began many business projects. One of the projects included a partnership which delivered Hillary Clinton’s inauguration gown to her.
Ted had a life full of adventures and an opinion on everything. If you had the opportunity to hear his stories, you realized Ted’s wit and story telling ability. These stories kept most of his acquaintances in stitches.
In the Army, Ted was stationed in Germany. After one of Kristin’s oceanographic expeditions, they met in Germany where Ted took Kristin to his favorite spots. This time not sleeping on trains to forego hotels. Those that know among his passions were fishing and eating. Ted showed Kristin each fishing spot he encountered and took her to his favorite restaurant.
Kristin’s parents, Bill and Agnes, had time shares and Ted enjoyed spending time with them and entertaining Bill with fishing while Kristin and her Mom had their mani’s and pedi’s or gambling treks. Ted’s belief was that to enjoy the many time shares taking Bill and Agnes was part of the “deal”.
Ted was an excellent photographer, taking artful photos of his nephews hanging from trees and peaking out of background foliage.
Ted was a collector. He accumulated impressive numbers of baseball cards, signed baseballs & caps, coins, watches, lapel pins and more. The last few years of Ted’s life he told the story that he did not believe that he outlived his high school buddies and other friends that were more fit than he was. He sat with some of those friends through chemo sessions and sat with others by their bedside during their last hours of life. The past year Ted and Kristin dealt with Ted’s kidney stone episode and then Ted’s shattered shoulder. His hope/resolution for 2019 was to get through the year without going under anesthesia.
He is missed by his sisters Sandi Charos, Sandi’s children Steve Kudalis, Steve’s children Christopher Kudalis and Amanda Kudalis, Ted’s youngest sister Beci Connolly, Beci’s husband John, Beci’s son Ryan Connolly and wife Brenna and their two children Oliver and Penelope and his stepbrother Tim Iufer, sons Michael and Brian.
Ted will also be missed by Kristin’s brothers and sisters as Ted loved them all as his own. Patricia Pollard spouse Gary, Patricia’s daughter Susanne Smith, husband Kirk and their children Allison and Madysyn, Bill Miholich and spouse Candi, Bill’s sons Nic, twins Kyle, wife Kristina and Kyle’s daughter Karinna and Cory; sister-in-law Michele Miholich and spouse Lou Bulte, brother-in-law Thomas Miholich and Tom’s sons Conrad and Jordan, sister-in-law Maria Chambers and spouse Ron. Maria’s children Jesse Miholich spouse Stacy and Jesse’s son Colbe and daughters Isabelle and Hailey, Adam Chambers and spouse Kiana and Adam’s daughter Mariah and Maria's daughter Casey.
Ted’s surviving long time best friend Cindy Meritt and daughter Laurie Pfankuch spouse Adam and Laurie’s son Drew and daughter Kendall and Cindy's son Scott and his wife Samantha had a special place in Ted’s heart.
