Wilfred "Bud" Wise, 88 This photo was his Marine portrait, and one of his favorites. It was taken in 1944. OCEANSIDE -- Bud Wise passed away on Tuesday, June 1, 2010. He was born in Mongo Indiana, on July 23, 1921. Bud graduated from Sturgis High School, in Sturgis Michigan in 1939 and studied engineering in college. In 1940, he married his childhood sweetheart, Burdeen (Burdee) Frederick, whom he had known since age five. Burdee passed away in September of 2009. Bud enlisted in the Marines in WWII and served in the 1st and 6th divisions in the South Pacific and China. He witnessed the signing of the peace treaty with Japan on the USS Missouri, and received a special letter of commendation from President Harry Truman. For many years, Bud's civilian life centered on designing furniture for mobile homes, RVs, and private aircraft. In 1965, he, Burdee, and daughter Janolyn moved from Indiana to Redlands, Calif. In 1975, Bud and Burdee moved to Oceanside where they remained as residents for 33 years. Both were members of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church. In 2008 they relocated to the San Fernando Valley to be near their daughter and son-in-law. In his later years, Bud returned to work at Camp Pendleton's South Mesa NCO club. After 16 years of service, he retired in 2004. Bud loved the Marines and Camp Pendleton. He often remarked that his proudest moments were when he served his country in WWII and that his happiest work-related moments were spent at Camp Pendleton. Loved by everyone, Bud had the unique talent of feeling comfortable in any situation and with anyone he met. His sense of humor always put others at ease. Bud is survived by his loving daughter, Dr. Janolyn Moore-Nelson, PhD; his grandson, Matthew Pedley of New York City; and his son-in-law, Phil Nelson. Viewing will take place between 11 a.m., and 12:30 p.m., Friday, June 18, at Eternal Hills Memorial Park, 1999 S. El Camino Real, in Oceanside. A celebration of life, with full military honors will follow, with Rev. Allen Kolkman officiating, also at Eternal Hills. Bud was a loving husband, father, and grandfather and a good friend to all. He is loved and missed by family and friends.
