Gina is survived by her devoted husband, Michael of Ogdensburg; her beloved son, L. Caleb Hurteau of Ogdensburg; her mother, Linda Hurteau of Ogdensburg; her sister, Amy (Edward) Nicorvo of Antwerp; along with cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends whose lives she touched in countless ways.
She was predeceased by her father, Lee C. Hurteau, in 2012, and her sister, Victoria Hurteau, in 2021 and mother-in-law Ruth Shoen in 2023.
Born on November 1, 1970, in Ogdensburg, Gina was the daughter of Lee and Linda (Martin) Hurteau. She attended Ogdensburg Free Academy and remained proud of her roots and the community that shaped her life. On July 12, 2014, she married Michael G. Shoen, beginning a partnership grounded in love, friendship, and unwavering support.
Gina dedicated her life to helping others. She began her career at Step by Step in Ogdensburg, where she served faithfully for 11 years as a peer worker, offering compassion, understanding, and encouragement to those in need. In 2015, she continued her calling with the Upstate Bureau of Regional Advocacy and Peer Support for the New York State Office of Mental Health. As Director of the upstate program, Gina was a tireless advocate and leader, providing meaningful services and steadfast guidance until her illness.
Gina found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments. She loved reading, camping in the Adirondacks, traveling, and spending treasured time with her family and friends. Above all, she found purpose in helping others—always ready with a listening ear, a warm smile, and an open heart.
She will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and the genuine care she extended to everyone she met. Her legacy of compassion and service will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.
