Robert G. Foster, age 87 of Grove Street in Potsdam died on Friday Dec 15, 2017 at his home. He has made a valuable contribution to the SUNY Upstate Medical University Anatomical Gift Program, therefore there will be no funeral services.
Surviving is his daughter Laura Foster & her husband John Arthur of Canton, NY; a grandson Jay Foster-Grover of Potsdam and a sister Gail Foster of Harrisburg, PA.
Robert was born on Sept 15, 1930 in Harrisburg, PA, a son of the late George & Mabel (Rhys) Foster. He graduated from Shippensburg University in 1952, served in the Army for two years following. He obtained a master’s degree from the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College, and completed his doctoral coursework at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught high school English at Susquehanna Township, PA, then at Oak Park High School, IL. In 1963, he and his then wife Selma moved to Potsdam, NY. He taught English at SUNY Potsdam until his retirement in 1999 as Associate Professor Emeritus. He prepared anew for each class, and strived to teach thoughtful analysis of literature and clear, concise writing.
He was an avid reader and correspondent. Kind, funny and inquisitive, he was a true friend to many. He had a lifelong love of jazz, and was perhaps Potsdam’s most dedicated pedestrian. Memorial contributions can be made to the Frederic Remington Art Museum 303 Washington St, Ogdensburg, NY 13669 or the St. Lawrence Valley SPCA 6718 NY-68, Ogdensburg, NY 13669.
