Doris Yvonne Williamson Turney, age 89, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017, in Oklahoma City, OK surrounded by family after a brief illness. She was born October 4, 1927 in Fort Worth, Texas and lived her life guided by her favorite scripture:
"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
She was preceded in death by her husband Curtis E. Turney, son Clark Turney, parents Frances Prokopis and Frank Williamson. She is survived by her children: daughters Laura Holman and husband Louis, Gayle Riggs and husband Derald, son Wayne Turney and husband Jeffrey Orr. She also leaves behind granddaughters Lyndsey Shirazi and husband Jason, their daughter Kinzey, Katie Holman, grandsons Dan Riggs and wife Shelly, and their new baby Olivia, Matthew Riggs and wife Monica, Martin Turney, and daughter-in-law Debra Turney.
Doris was born and raised in Texas and always considered herself a Texan, even though she lived in Oklahoma for 70 years. She occasionally joked that she never forgave her husband for taking her away from her beloved state. Curtis met Doris when she was only 13 and he was 19. Five years later when he returned from serving in World War II, he proposed. They were married for over 44 years until his death in 1991. Doris and Curtis both graduated from the University of Oklahoma with degrees in geology in 1948. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, and grandmother. She and Curtis were longtime members of May Avenue Methodist Church, where she was very involved in the United Methodist Women and led many bible study classes. Her interests included sewing, genealogy, and as her children described, her desire to learn to play the piano. Doris' love for animals was a peek into her generous heart - she had a deep love for her many pets, including her beloved dog, Buddy.
If you asked her what her greatest joy was in her life she would've said her family. She was a devoted Christian and her faith helped her through very difficult times. She will be remembered by her sweet, kind, generous, humble and loving personality, but a strong, determined woman who loved her Lord and lived accordingly.
Over the last several years Doris had been enjoying living at Epworth Villa in Oklahoma City, where the staff called her their "favorite" for her cheerful attitude, grateful heart, and love for those around her.
