Robert “Bob” Lynn Porter passed away on January 22nd, 2023 in his home with his loving wife Grace. Bob was born on December 15th, 1960 in Fredonia, Kansas, the son of Orval and Margaret Porter. Bob was united in marriage to Grace Anne on June 1st, 1990.
Bob attended Kansas State University from 1979 to 1981, where he received Associate’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He graduated with honors and was mentioned in the “Who’s Who” of college attendees his graduating year. His career began at Applied Automation, Inc. in Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1981. His software and hardware engineering was critical to modern seismic exploration techniques used by Phillips Petroleum after hiring him in 1986. He then applied his programming skills to help Hertz Automotive from 1986-1988, Applied Intelligence Group from 1988 to 1997, and finished his career as the Digital Imaging Systems Manager at Candid Color Systems where he worked for 26 years. His work has contributed to many patents spanning the fields of seismic analysis to image processing.
Bob was a modern renaissance man and served as a role model throughout his life. He believed in the Boy Scouts of America, where he served as a mentor to the boys of many troops throughout the state, as well as to their mentors as a leader in Wood Badge, a scouting leadership program. His engineering skills also helped the boys make the best pinewood derby cars and cubmobiles. Bob also devoted himself to his faith and community as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. In his early life, he was an avid skydiver with hundreds of hours of experience. This hobby started his famous appearances as Santa Claus after skydiving into malls to bring Christmas spirit. He loved baking family recipes and was a barbecue master, providing hand-decorated christmas cookies and delicious smoked meats for his friends and family. Bob was also an active member of the National Rifle Association, with a love and respect for firearms. He enjoyed every aspect from collecting guns, to shooting with his friends and teaching others how to handle firearms safely and responsibly. Everywhere he went, Bob always made a friend. His legacy lives on in both his achievements and the family and friends he cherished.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 33 years, Grace Porter, of Edmond, Oklahoma; his son, Dr. Hunter Porter; his brothers Richard and William Porter; and nieces and nephews Andrea, Sheena, John, and Chris Porter. He rests now with his parents and son Nicholas Porter, exemplifying what it means to be a good father and husband in life and in death.
