Walter was born in El Reno, Oklahoma on June 23, 1930 as one of eight siblings to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur and Faye Simons. He was a proud graduate of El Reno High School and a lifelong fan of their athletic teams. After high school, Walter enlisted with the United States Army, and served our country for four years, part of that time in Okinawa. Walter's last few months of his tour were in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. It was while stationed at Fort Chaffee that Walter met the love of his life, Wanda Sue Hensley, wife of 57 years.
While completing his higher education in Amarillo, Texas, Walter and Sue began their family with the birth of their son Eddie. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Oklahoma City, where Walter earned his Bachelor of Science in Business from Oklahoma City University. Walter then started his career with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority that lasted for 30 years, until his retirement, at which time he had obtained the position of Comptroller of the Turnpike Authority.
The family grew with the arrival of their beautiful daughter Holly Gayle in 1957. The Simons family attended Hudson Avenue Baptist Church faithfully until the early 1970's, until they moved to Edmond, OK. Walter was a Founder and Deacon at what is today Edmond Road Baptist Church, where he used accounting skills as the Treasurer for many years. After Walter's retirement, he and Sue enjoyed many years of traveling and living life out loud together. He also volunteered as much as possible at the church, living out his servanthood spirit. Walter's faith is central to who he is and was, as a loving and devoted husband and father, and very proud grandfather. He touched many lives, always extending a hand. And because of the love of Jesus that radiated from him, we feel he made this world a better place. Well done, my good and faithful servant.
Walter is survived by his wife, Sue Simons; son, Eddie Simons & wife Tamatha of Edmond; OK; daughter, Holly Kinsky & husband Carl of French Village, MO; grandson, Carsten Simons of Edmond, OK; three brothers, three sisters, and their families; and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, October 11, 2010, at Edmond Road Baptist Church, 1207 W 3rd St., Edmond, OK 73034. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
