He was born in Oklahoma City on July 9, 1954 to Warren Sr., and Mickey Bassett. Warren, known as Buster since babyhood, grew up in the southside area of Oklahoma City with his parents, sister and many cousins. His love of music started in elementary school and by the time he graduated from Capitol Hill high school in 1972, he had a sizable album collection. While attending Oklahoma University that continued love of music led him away from college and into an expansive career in the retail music entertainment industry in Oklahoma, Texas and California. Sound Warehouse, Blockbuster Music, and Second Spin offered him opportunities to meet musical artists, promoters and producers and of course, add to his music collection. As the music industry changed, Warren shifted his expertise into retail store management with Uptown and Homeland grocery stores until he retired in 2021.
He was a world traveler, visiting many countries in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean, where he loved to sightsee off the beaten paths and snorkel at the beach and of course, visit any place where he could discover new musical artists!
Warren’s hobby of collecting music memorabilia continued as he lived. His eclectic collection reflects the life and times of 8 track tapes, vinyl records, cassettes, CDs and most recently, digital downloads. His concert ticket stubs, buttons, backstage passes and posters are a wonder, with hundreds of concert ticket stubs, backstage passes, buttons, pins, autographed posters that would rival any record store today.
Warren will be deeply missed by his wife, Tara Bassett, his sons, Tony and Travis Bassett, his sister Vickey and her husband Tony Goodman, granddaughters Adari and Echo, their mother Mary Turner, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Warren and Mickey; grandparents Clyde and Zora Bassett, Willie and Mattie Hunter; and Sisters Carol Smith and Janice Smith.
A memorial service for Warren will be held Friday, June 9, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Memorial Park Historic Chapel, 13400 N Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73131. A graveside service will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
