Consuelo (Connie) Mederos Vazquez, a long-time resident of Orlando, passed away peacefully on July 2nd, 2021 at 100 years old. Consuelo was born to Ramon and Corina Mederos in Havana, Cuba. She married the love of her life, Juanito, in 1944, and lived in Havana until 1961. A dedicated mother to her 3 children and to her husband, Consuelo possessed the skills of the typical housewife of the era, an excellent cook and seamstress, and ran an efficient and organized household filled with love. She was a young-at-heart mother, active in her children's activities and interests, and shared with them her love of animals. She loved to travel, which she did with her parents before being married, and continued with Juan as newlyweds, until their children arrived. Along with Juan, she immigrated to the United States in 1961, fleeing the Castro takeover of their homeland, to join their 3 children, that had been sent ahead to New Orleans, LA, in search of the freedom offered by the United States. After 4 years in New Orleans, the family moved to Orlando, her home for the last 56 years. Having to start over in a new country, Consuelo relied on her skills as a seamstress, her occupation throughout her working years, to help support the family. Even in her late years, she did alterations from home.
Second only to her love of her family, was her love for this great country, so full of opportunity, that gave her and her family a 2nd chance to live in peace and freedom. She proudly became a US citizen in 1972, and together with Juan lived the Great American Dream. Living modestly, together with Juan, she made a life for herself and the family. Her greatest joy was the success of her 3 children in life, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Once the children left home, Consuelo and Juan resumed their love of travel, and saw a lot of the world and the United States.
Consuelo is predeceased by her husband, Juan, and her youngest son, William. She is survived by her children Corina (Glen) Rase of Winter Park, FL, John (Barbara) Vazquez of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and daughter-in-law Joann Vazquez, of Riverview, FL, as well as 6 grandchildren, 1 step-grandchild, and 3 great-grandchildren.
