Daniel Joseph Dunn, 64, of Shawnee, KS, passed away on the 9th of October, 2016 at Promise Nursing Facility. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 13 from 6-8pm and the Rosary will be prayed at 7:30pm at McGilley and Hoge Memorial Chapel in Overland Park. A Mass will be held at St. Rose Philippine Duschene in Fairway, KS on Friday October 14 at 9am, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wyandotte County Advice and Aid Pregnancy Center or St. Rose Philippine Duschene Church. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend and left everyone happier and better for having known him.
Dan grew up in Kansas City, MO, right in the middle of 6 brothers and 1 sister. He went to Rockhurst High School and attended college at Santa Fe College in New Mexico, later finishing an Associates Degree at UMKC.
After college, he began a life that kept him close to his roots. Dan met his wife, Marcia, and they married in 1977, settling down to raise their family in Shawnee, KS. Family was always one of the most important things in Dan’s life and he loved nothing better than caring for his wife and three children – and eventually the grandkids.
Dan was known for being able to fix anything and especially enjoyed the positions that he held at area hardware stores where he was able to put his skills to good use helping everyone who walked down his aisle.
The most important part of Dan’s life was his Catholic Faith and he always found ways of serving St. Joseph’s Parish in Shawnee, and then the Latin Mass Community. He began a service at St. Joseph’s for parish members who were home bound or in nursing homes, coordinating visitors and people to bring them Holy Communion. He was very active in the Legion of Mary for many years; he was especially good at meeting people and introducing them to the Catholic Faith. Dan's engaging and larger than life personality found him friends wherever he went. He had a special devotion to Our Lady and felt a call to defend the unborn. He also continued to visit nursing home throughout his life and always wanted to remind the residents of the power of their sufferings. Dan believed firmly that God always has good purposes for the events in our lives, even when we might not be able to see them for ourselves.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia, his children, Courtney, Nicole (Simon), and Brian (Colleen), and 10 grandchildren. Please pray for the repose of his soul.
