Dr. Frank A. Serra DVM

Frank was born on March 27th to Margaret and Joseph Serra in Westerly, Rhode Island. Frank graduated the University of Rhode Island in 1956 and went on to study Veterinary Medicine at Oklahoma State University.

After graduating top of his class in May 1960, Frank was one of six interns chosen annually from all colleges of veterinary medicine at the prestigious Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

After his internship, he joined a veterinary practice in Overland Park, starting off a 44 year career. Frank’s practice centered around small and exotic animals.

In 1958, he met Loretta Sue Seawright, and they wed in 1960, going on to have four children, Terry, Janet Carol, Stacy and Mike.

Throughout his life, Frank was an avid hobbiest. He applied his professionalism, scientific rigor and his love of animals and nature to excel in a number of different of activities. He bred and showed dogs, practiced falconry, raised and showed Arabian horses and bred and showed fancy show pigeons. After retiring in 2005, Frank spent his time carving wooden birds and cultivating and showing orchids.

Frank was predeceased by his daughter Janet Carol and his sister Delores Beal. He is survived by his wife Loretta Sue; his sister Julia Risica; his three remaining children, Terry Gardner and husband David, Stacy Helton and husband Steve, and Mike Serra and his wife Noelle Bergmans; and his 7 grandchildren Jennifer, Bailey, Megan, Scott, Serra, Riley and Matthew.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 29, 2021 from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. A Celebration of Life service will occur Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at 1:30 PM, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. Inurnment will follow on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens, 23215 W. 75th Street, Shawnee, Kansas 66227.
