A visitation for Gary will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. A celebration of life service will occur Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 5:00 PM, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. A graveside service will occur Friday, June 2, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Park Hill Cemetery, 174 17th Street, Syracuse, Nebraska 68466.
Gary Clark Witt, 80, passed away on May 22, 2023 at a nursing facility in Overland Park, KS. Gary was born April 24, 1943 in Lincoln, NE. He grew up on the family farm in Syracuse, NE. After graduating from Syracuse High School in 1960, he began college at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln. After serving in the U.S. Air Force between 1962 and 1965, he completed his History college degree in 1968. Thereafter, he worked in the insurance industry. Gary married Nancy Newton of Milford, NE in August 1969 and they had two children, Christy (1971) and Bryan (1972). In November 1970, Gary joined the FBI as a Special Agent where he served for 30 years. His assignments included Little Rock, AR (one year), Washington, DC (9 years) and Kansas City, MO (20 years). He worked numerous violations, to include organized crime, drug trafficking and the Oklahoma City bombing.
Gary (aka Poppy, Socks, Wittsky) enjoyed all outdoor activities: especially golfing, hunting, fishing, gardening and yard-work. Gary was a loyal and great friend, as well as a mentor and model to other Agents. He never missed the weekly happy hours with close friends at the Quaff or Ponaks. Gary's taste in clothes was legendary, along with his ability to pack five times the amount of items for out-of-town trips.
Gary is survived by his daughter Christy Witt, son-in-law Pierre Floriano, son Bryan Witt (aka Socks Jr.), daughter-in-law Suzanne Witt, grandchildren Braden Witt, Jessica Witt, Joshua Floriano, Juliette Floriano and Annika Witt, brother Don Witt, brother Terry Witt, sister-in-law Carol Witt, niece Karen Witt, niece Linda Polnicky, nephew Kevin Witt, and niece Leslie Witt.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Nettie, his niece Joan Cowan, and his sister-in-law Catherine (Kay) Witt.
