
Dr. Joseph S. Rydzel, 90, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on September 26, 2010 at Freedom Pointe Assisted Living, Overland Park, KS. Visitation will be on Wednesday, September 29 at 9:30 a.m. at Church of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 8311 W. 93rd St, Overland Park, KS 66212, with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, in Lenexa, KS. Dr. Joseph Rydzel was born July 9, 1920 in Worcester, MA. He was the son of Anthony and Anna Rydzel. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the 78th infantry division. He married Shirley Fleming on August 5, 1944. Having earned a Masters degree at Columbia University (NYC) and a Doctorate of Philosophy at the University of Kansas, he was a professor at Rockhurst University for 39 years. He was a fixture at Hawks basketball games, becoming their official scorer for many years. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and playing golf. He was a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital for over 25 years; he was also an active member of Church of the Holy Cross Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley. Survivors include sons: James (Mary) Rydzel of Bluffton, SC; Richard Rydzel of Overland Park, KS; daughters: Ann (Eli) Walker of Warner Robins, GA; Margaret (Chris) Grzywacz of Lexington, KY; grandchildren: Ian (Krissondra) Rydzel, Craig Rydzel, Molly Rydzel, Megan Grzywacz, Ally Grzywacz, and great grandchildren Hannah Bell and Declan Rydzel.
