Marianne Gier Carr, 94, passed away at Lakeview Village, in Lenexa, Kansas, on Monday, May 1, 2017. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri on July 18, 1922, to Louise (Cauley) and Joseph Gier. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier grade school, St. Teresa Academy and Kansas City Community College. After working as a secretary, she enjoyed working as a TWA hostess for three years.
Marianne married Joe Carr on January 25, 1947, sharing 70 happy years together. They raised nine children in Prairie Village, Kansas. Her faith and her family were her priorities. She and Joe were active members and daily Mass attendees at St. Ann’s Church for 55 years. Marianne was a member of the parish women’s prayer group and the Daughters of Charity. She had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother and, during her and Joe’s many travels, was able to visit Medjugorje in Eastern Europe, where apparitions of the Virgin Mary have occurred. In 2005 Joe and Marianne moved to Lakeview Village in Lenexa and joined Holy Trinity Church.
She lived her faith in countless acts of charity over the years. She opened up her home and heart to the many strangers her brother, Fr. Tom, brought over for a meal or lodging.
Marianne loved having fun, cheering for her Chiefs and Jayhawks, dancing with Joe, making her famous pizza, playing bridge and Scrabble, and sewing and crocheting.
Marianne is preceded in death by her siblings, Jeanne Myers Fisher, Shirley Neenan Brenneke, Rev. Thomas Gier, John Gier and infant brothers, Stanley and Joseph. She is also preceded by her son, Jim Carr and her daughter, Nancy Carter.
She leaves behind her husband Joe and her children Jan (Kit) Richards, Lucy (Frank) Markovich, Maureen Carr (Bob Miller), Carolyn (Randy) Curtis, Frank Carr (Max Koster), Judge Peggy (Rick) Kittel, Connie (Bob) Mikelait and daughter-in-law Margie Carr.
“Mernie” will be also missed by 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
The family owes a huge debt of gratitude to the staff at the Lakeview Care Center for the loving, attentive and compassionate care they provided Marianne the past three years.
Visitation will be at McGilley & Hoge Memorial Chapel at 8024 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park, Kansas, on Thursday, May 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church at 13615 W. 92nd St. in Lenexa, Kansas, on Friday, May 5.
