I  lost my beloved mother, Dottie Dickey on Dec. 8th.  I didn't think I could grieve any harder until I learned today, (Dec. 24) that her dear, dear friend Nancy passed away only a day later.  

I lived in another state for many years but always returned to celebrate Christmas with my mother.  And a key and cherished "to do" item during those visits  was having lunch with Mom and Nancy-Poo.  Nancy's humor and grace and kindness were not to be missed.

Southwest Kansas in general and Pittsburg in particular have been the cradle of creation some fine people but surely Dorothea Thomas and Nancy Messenger are among their very finest.  I am consoled only in knowing that Mom and Nancy are now rejoined  with Barbara Ann (who has been waiting 19 years), and Phyllis (who has been waiting over 40).  

I send my deepest, most heartfelt sympathy to Melissa, Sarah, Matthew and Patrick.   

To Nancy’s children,
Your mom was such a big part of my time at Addington Place. She was always kind, concerned and a pleasure to be with. I met several of you and her character and values are reflected in you. We will miss her; she was gracious, friendly and always had a pleasant greeting for anyone she encountered. I am so sorry for your loss.

We are thinking of the entire King Family tonight as you mourn the loss of your wonderful Mother Nancy.  What an incredible lady she was!  We had the privilege of living across the street from she and Tem for 14 years.  They were the best neighbors you could ask for!  We shared many laughs and good times with them and missed them terribly when they moved.  I learned some great toasts from Nancy and some really funny sayings that I repeat quite often.  My favorites being "Everybody is seasick but the Captain" and when raising your glass for a toast Nancy would always say "Who's better than us? Damn few!" Nancy and Tem were the best.... and damn few were better than them!

I will always remember Nancy's beautiful smile and twinkling eyes.   She was gracious and engaging every time I had the pleasure of seeing her.  I am very lucky to have her Meatball Soup recipe, courtesy of her daughter, Sarah.  It has become a favorite meal in my family and I will always think of Nancy when I make it.  

My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this difficult time.  

I will always have fond memories of Nancy King. She was my second mother as a young boy. She took such good care of Matt and I all those years ago. The Winslow’s and the King’s spent a lot of time together back in those days. I will never forget the fourth of July’s in one of our back yards. I can still feel the burns on my hand from leaning on the grill, or the time I fell off the back of Jugs station wagon and landed on my face in the Kings driveway. I could go on and on. Our thoughts and prayers to the King family. I miss you all. I’m sure Carol, Jug, Tem, and Nancy are enjoying a nice talk about the old days in Lawrence, and telling family stories.
