Our beloved Becky departed this earth leaving us with precious memories. She is survived by her son Rylan K. O’Brien of Tucson, parents, Robert & Dusty Hudson of Patagonia AZ, sister, Emilie Hudson of Denver CO, Grandmother, Norma Orr, Mayer AZ, Aunts and Uncles Bill & Debbie Hudson Wellton AZ, Jay and Louise Hudson, cousins Cody Hudson (Lorrie), Chad Hudson (Ginger) their son Blaine all from Hobbs New Mexico, and the Tucson Basketball Family.
Grandparents J.T. and Evelyn Hudson and Grandfather Robert Orr Jr. are now watching over her until we all meet again.
Becky was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona.
She grew up on the Vaca Ranch in Patagonia, Arizona. Becky was active in 4-H, showing steers, and was a member of various athletic teams in high school. She attended Arizona Western College in Yuma and lived for a short time in Flagstaff while attending NAU before returning to Tucson. She wanted to live in the city.
While living and working in Tucson she met her future husband, Juan O’Brien. Becky and Juan became the proud parents of their son, Rylan. Oh, how she loved that little boy.
At an early age Rylan became obsessed with the game of basketball. His parents were avid college basketball fans. They attended U of A games on a regular basis. Of course Becky had to always torment her father since he attended ASU. Rylan decided that he wanted to try and play college basketball and started working toward his goal in hopes of receiving scholarships to allow him to fulfill his dreams.
As life deals us with our ups and downs Becky became a single Mom. She had a busy schedule with making sure Rylan was successful in school, taking him to basketball practice twice a week, and working. Then there were the basketball tournaments that they attended. Rylan joined a traveling basketball team. They played in tournaments in San Diego, L.A. Las Vegas, Portland, Atlanta, New Orleans, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Provo, St. Louis and Kansas City. Becky was always there in the stands supporting her son. She was a “Basketball Mom”.
Becky’s love for Rylan was her driving force. It was always his future and happiness that was foremost in her thoughts. They were at a basketball tournament in Kansas City when Becky passed away. A few days before they left for Kansas City Becky had dental work performed. She developed an infection. The infection worsened so she went to the ER in Tucson and received stronger antibiotics. When Becky and Rylan left for Kansas City on Friday morning she was not feeling well but insisted that she needed to go to be there for Rylan. On Saturday morning she was taken to the Kansas City Medical Center where she underwent tests and was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia or AML. It was felt by the Doctors that she had the leukemia for a short period of time but it was the most aggressive they had ever seen. She was diagnosed and passed away within a twenty-four hour period.
We are forever grateful to the Drs. and staff at Kansas University Medical Center, Dr. Dan Beskind, Robbie and Gayle Lewis of Tucson, and part of Rylan’s basketball family, for their kindness, care and support of Becky and our family. We also would like to acknowledge the incredible people in Kansas City that touched our lives and guided us through this extremely difficult time.
When Dusty and Emilie arrived in Kansas City they were received at the hospital by Rylan’s basketball team. Thank you!
Becky, you may not be present but you will forever be with us. We love you forever and always.
In Lieu of flowers, we have chosen to honor Becky’s love for her son and establish a scholarship fund for Rylan’s future at the National Bank of Arizona.
