Robert Raymond Armbruster (b. 1/21/39), better known as Bob, Grandpa Bob and Big Gun, peacefully slipped the bonds of earth on 3/28/25, after gracing us with his remarkable presence for over 86 years. Bob came from sturdy Midwestern German-American stock from his late loving parents, Carl and Iris. He spent most of his youth, along with his two brothers (Bruce and the late Jack) and sister (the late Ruth Ann), in Hinsdale and then La Grange, IL.
After graduating from Lyons Township High School in 1957, Bob served Uncle Sam with a hitch (initially reluctant) in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer from 1962-65. His unit, Company D of the 54th Engineer Battalion, was stationed in West Germany near the historic Fulda Gap gateway to the Iron Curtain. After returning stateside, Bob’s prospects would soon soar.
In 1968, after a chance introduction by a high school buddy, Bob met the love of his life, Bonnie Mary (nee Stewart). Wedding bells soon followed on 2/01/69, when Bob and Bonnie’s lives changed forever and for the better. Later that year, their son, Rob, was born, followed by his Irish twin, Susan, 11 months later. Together with Bonnie’s two other children, Jeff and Karen, Bob and his bride started a new family and home. In 1977, they relocated to the comfort of Overland Park, KS, where they settled comfortably in their same house for over 47 years.
When not juggling his work in the power industry and paternal duties, Bob was a master tinkerer, skilled outdoorsman, golfing duffer, aspiring antiquarian (tutored by Bonnie), and, most endearingly, an inveterate talker. He loved shooting the breeze with everyone he met, friend or stranger, and whether across the yard, down the street, at the local Hy-Vee or Hen House, or at any endless little league game. It didn’t matter. He radiated light and kindness to all who were fortunate to cross his path. Bob was also loyal in keeping up with his high school, Army, and neighborhood buddies. Last, but not least, Bob was any dog’s best friend. He always had an uncanny bond with canines, including over the years the trusty Nicholas and his many granddogs and other neighborhood furry companions.
56 years of marriage is quite a milestone, through thick and thin. Bob was a devoted husband to Bonnie and unconditionally supported her every whim, wish or idea – no matter how “off the wall” (but not without an occasional grumble). However, Bob’s quality she cherishes (along with their kids) the most was his infectious sense of humor. The countless hours they laughed together, and sometimes at each other, are priceless. Bob was always a strong, generous, and stoic man of faith, which he exhibited most notably during his lengthy illness, which he faced with lightheartedness and hope, and a mischievous twinkle in his eye, without complaint.
All these traits prepared Bob for the starring role of his life – the doting Grandpa. He was a rockstar grandfather to his seven adoring grandchildren, Nicholas, Andrew, Stephanie, Marinel, Carly, Michael, and Ryleigh, each of whose lives he touched forever. When Grandpa Bob came to town, his grandkids were enthralled by his special indulgences, his irrepressible (and sometimes R-rated) sense of humor, his lack of filter, his unique way of making each grandkid feel like they were the center of the universe, and his willingness to permit the grandkids to “break the rules”, especially when Mom and Dad were away from home.
Indelible happy memories abound. From being awakened early with Grandma Bonnie on Christmas morning by grandkids jumping on their bed eager to open presents, to calmly constructing any do-it-yourself Xmas gift with his handy pocket knife (there wasn’t a widget Bob couldn’t fix), to making the daily coffee and scone run to Starbucks, and to patiently cheering on his grandkids at many sporting events. There are also fond memories of summer swimming lessons and pool time, adventures at the Plaza and Crown Center, and the simple pleasure of enjoying old-fashioned ice cream on a sweltering summer night. And each grandkid will always safeguard their own time snuggling up to Grandpa and reading a bedtime story.
Grandpa Bob’s greatest legacy is his family and grandchildren. His love, kindness, humor, and support will always be remembered. Here’s to a life very fully and well lived. On behalf of your family, we miss you; let your memory be a blessing.
