

Bob loved basketball. He was an athlete of the highest caliber, winning 69 straight games and three state basketball championships at Edina High School in Edina, MN. He continued his athletic career at Kansas State University, where he played from 1969-1972, earned the Big Eight “Newcomer of the Year” honor in 1970 and played in two NCAA Elite Eights.
Bob loved the candy business. After graduating from KSU, he began his career at Hallmark Cards in Omaha, NE before relocating to Kansas City in 1986 to work at Bogdon Candy Company. Prior to his passing he was Vice President of Sales for Richardson Brands Company.
Bob loved cooking. His boundless creativity and desire to bring happiness to others shone through in his passion for cooking. A consummate chef, Bob drew great joy in life gathering his family on Sunday evenings to delight in his culinary adventures.
Bob loved his family. His successes on the court and in his career, however, were exceeded by his unparalleled devotion to his wife, family, and friends.
People loved Bob. Those who knew him knew that he was a true giant – literally and figuratively. Standing 6’8”, Bob’s height was matched by his heart. He gave generously of his time and energy, and his character and charisma lifted the spirits of all who met him. Always one to walk his own path, Bob’s life was defined by love, laughter, selflessness and sacrifice. He left the world with many accomplishments, no regrets, and at peace.
He was preceded in death by his brother Rick and his mother Mary Zender. Survivors include wife Patricia Zender, of the home; three sons, Robert G. III (Adriane) of Prairie Village, KS, Matthew (fiancée Kristin Kenton) of Kansas City, MO, and Andrew (Kelly) of Columbia, MD; two granddaughters, Olivia and Charlotte Zender (Robert III); father Robert G. Zender I of Lincoln, NE; and two sisters, Kris Peterson (Don) of Lincoln, NE, and Suzy Urick (Jim) of Woodbury, MN.
A memorial service will be held at Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kansas State University Foundation or the Village Presbyterian Church Endowment Trust.
