

Harvey "Sherwood" Songer, age 93, of Overland Park passed away at Shawnee Mission Medical Center from a brief illness on January 9, 2018. He was born on July 23, 1924 to Harry "Otto" and Velma (Holmes) Songer in Severy, Kansas. Sherwood proudly served his country in WWII where he served in the Navy. After returning home from the war Sherwood married Etta Marline "EM" Velthoen in Garnett, Kansas where they went on to have two children. He traveled and installed stores in Kansas and Missouri for Montgomery Wards and went on to be Superintendent of Nelson Art Gallery. Sherwood was a handyman who always found projects to be done including fixing up his rental homes and building two houses of his own. He was a hardworking man and always kept busy but found time to be a Scout Master for 7 years of Troop 50 in Kansas City, MO., work as a missionary with EM in Mexico and spent free time with his family traveling, camping and fishing. Sherwood and EM were married for 40 years until her struggle with cancer took her life on June 3, 1988. After Etta Marline's death he went on to meet Helen Fox while square dancing and they were married on August 12, 1989. He continued to work hard into "retirement" but found time to enjoy gardening, traveling, going on cruises and spending the winters in Texas. Sherwood and Helen were happily married for 28 years. He was a member of the Nazarene Church in MO.
Sherwood is survived his wife, Helen (Fox) Songer; two children, Vernon (Barbara) Songer of Raymore, MO, Susan (John) Foster of San Antonio, TX; 4 grandchildren, Tiffany Foster, Shawn (Sheri) Songer, Johnna Foster, Jamason Songer; 3 great-grandchildren and 1 sister, Betty (Dewey) Daniels.
Sherwood was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Etta Marline; and 1 sister, Gail (Homer) Dippold.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2018 with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. at McGilley & Hoge Johnson County Memorial Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, KS.
