Zona Irene Sherry

Zona Irene Sherry, age 100, of Overland Park, Kansas passed away on January 15, 2023. Visitation will be Saturday, January 21st from 10:30 am – 11:30 am at the McGilley & Hoge Chapel, 8024 Santa Fe Drive, Overland Park, Kansas. Funeral Service will follow on Saturday at 11:30 am at the Chapel. Interment in Johnson County Memorial Gardens, 11200 Metcalf, Overland Park, Kansas. Zona was a Christian who dedicated her life to service and family. She was a lifelong member of Overland Park Baptist Church where she served on many committees, in many circles and in her later years filled in at Church Secretary for a long stint.

After high school, she worked in a law office and then was a telephone operator and supervisor in the early days of the primitive phone system where operators actually rang thru calls. She married Leonard after WWII and settled in rural Overland Park, where she was a full time mom and raised her four children. Children, family, and extended family were her focus. Trips to Colorado and numerous family camping trips were the agenda for summers. Whether it be swimming, fishing, water skiing and even riding a jet ski…. she was right in there with the kids.

She had a great sense of humor and truly enjoyed life. Her other hobbies were sewing (making her and her daughters’ clothes), crocheting Afghans (for everyone), being an avid reader, and crossword puzzle whiz!

Zona loved adventure and traveling. She made many memorable trips in the US and abroad with her sister, Marie and sister-in-law, Esther. One of her favorites was when the trio went to the Holy Land. Despite some family concern about the stability of the region, they were not worried as God was traveling them. Her faith never wavered. She had a huge heart and she took care of everyone - whether it family, a neighbor in need, or a stranger.

There are so many stories and memories about Zona. A true friend, spouse, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She leaves an emptiness in our hearts, but we know she is another guardian angel watching over us.

Zona was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Sherry; brothers, Virgil Lacy, Glen Lacy and Fred Lacy; sister, Marie Smith; great granddaughter, Molly Harp and great grandson, Max Harp.

Survivors include her sons, Bob Sherry, Jim Sherry and Ken Sherry; and her daughter, Janice Harp. She is also survived by grandchildren, Chad Harp, Michele Harp, Jon Sherry, Jennifer Sherry, Joanne Sherry, Tim Sherry, Brent Sherry and Bethany Sherry; and great grandchildren, Maddie Harp, Layton Brooks, Alexa Sherry Parry, Walker Sherry Parry, Saoirse Sherry Parry, Leo Sherry and Anna Sherry.
