Heaven and is right now rejoicing with her best friend, Jesus, along with her Ruth Ann, John, Clint,
Albert, and all the company of Heaven. Mom is home at last.
Alice Mary Nutter was born in Snow Hill, Nicholas County, WV, on December 17, 1918. She was the
sixth of nine children born to Lawrence and Jenny (Fleger) Nutter. Mom lived longer than nearly all
her contemporaries, preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Frank, Fred, French, Forrest and
Earl Nutter; sisters, Anne Hart, Maye Agee, and Lucille Carte; and 43 in-laws. Alice grew up in
Quinwood, WV, and graduated from Rainelle High School in 1937. She attended Glenville State
College and received a two year Standard Normal Teaching Certificate in 1939.
On December 27, 1941 she married Samuel Clint Hale. They had four children. Husband, Clint (1980),
infant daughter Ruth Ann (1944), and son John (1978) preceded her in death. Son, Joe Hale and his
wife Judy of South Charleston, and daughter, MariJane Hale Frilen and husband Bob of Winter
Springs, FL, survive. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren, four great-great
grandchildren: grandson John II and wife Nikki of St. Albans (great grandchildren, Elizabeth Zolnar
(Jonathan), John III (Brittney), and Elijah; great-great grandchildren, Scarlet Zolnar and Maria and
Maverick Hale); grandson Jeff Hale and wife Karen of York, SC (great grandsons, Dustin and Austin);
grandson Michael Hale and wife Lisa of Madisonville, KY (great grandsons, Steffan, Gavin, and
Braeden; great-great granddaughter, Adailia Hale); granddaughter, Alicia Hale Smarr and husband

grandson, Ryan Frilen of Casselberry, FL (great grandson Aiden Bull of Willow Street, PA) foster
grandson, Jaq Rivera of Winter Springs, Fl (foster great grandson Jayden Rivera of Bronx, NY).
On June 19, 1982, Alice married her second husband, Albert Wilson Haynes, who preceded her in
death in 2015. They lived in Spring Hill, WV. She enjoyed the love and happy company of a large
family and stories of her life will comfort those who survive her.
In June, 2018, Alice moved to Winter Springs, FL to live with her daughter, and for these 18 months
enjoyed frequent visits of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other friends and relations …
celebrating birthdays, holidays, and the everyday blessings of that busy household. Her sphere of
friends was enlarged and she will be remembered fondly by all those who were blessed to get to
know her during the last months of her life.
Alice’s most enduring relationship and of most importance was with her Savior, Lord, and friend,
Jesus. She became a committed Christ Follower in 1952 and was a member of the Highlawn
Community Chapel in St. Albans and later of Spring Hill Baptist Church. She taught Sunday School at
the Chapel and served faithfully in VBS and AWANA at SHBC until the age of 91. She was a huge fan of
WEMM Christian radio and Christian television programing. The monthly luncheons of Jolly Seniors at
Cross Lanes Bible Church was a favorite destination. Truly, she had no greater joy than to know that
her children and grandchildren walk with the Lord, and cannot be honored nor loved more than for
all her loved ones to glorify God, love and enjoy Jesus, and join her in Heaven.
Our mom requested any memorials be made to Spring Hill Baptist Church, Cross Lanes Bible Church
(Jolly Seniors), or The Gideons. The Good Shepherd Mortuary, 335 5th Avenue, South Charleston is in
charge of final arrangements. The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on January 2, 2020 at Good
Shepherd. Visitation will be from 11:30 am prior to the service. She will be laid to her everlasting
rest beside her beloved Clint at Cunningham Cemetery in St. Albans.
