Glenna B. Stoner was born on March 1, 1918 and was one of five girls born to Frankie and LaVern Pifer. The family survived through the Great Depression even though times were tough. Early in her adult life she and her older sister attended and completed nursing school and worked at Rochester Hospital in New York, until she had a calling to join the Navy in 1943 during World War II. Glenna served on the Navy’s Hospital ship “Hope”, New Orleans and the Panama Canal Zone where she helped treat wounded soldiers and P.O.W.’s. Sometime after she left the service she met who was to become her husband of 25 years, Dr. Edward W. Stoner, and in 1953 the town leaders of Oviedo, Florida offered to build them a clinic to set up their practice and they accepted. Glenna served as head nurse of the clinic for around 25 years treating most of the town at one time or another. In 1956 she and Dr. Stoner adopted their daughter Fay and in 1957 they adopted their son Glen. Glenna was also happy to be a stepmom to Ed Stoner, his wife Denise and step grandmother to their daughter DeeDee. In 1975 Glenna’s service to others continued on until she was in her 80’s as a private care nurse for a number of the town’s people. In addition she served as an officer in the American Legion, Post 243, the Oviedo Women’s Club and her church’s Women’s Circle where one of her favorite things was heading up the Bake Sale each October. She was also a founding member of the Oviedo Historical Society. Glenna’s whole life was a service to others. She was always there for her loved ones right up to the end of her time with us. Glenna is survived by her daughter Fay, son Glen and stepson Ed (Denise), and step granddaughter DeeDee, her sister Vernadine Gersey of New York and numerous nieces and nephews. The service for Glenna will be held on Saturday, April 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 263 King Street, Oviedo, Florida. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home, 51 Childrens Way, Enterprise, Florida 32725.
