

Susan J. (Cassler) Weber, 61, Lake Mary, Florida, formerly of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away after a short illness at Central Florida Regional Hospital. She joined her heavenly Father on Friday, April 17, 2015. Services will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Oviedo, Florida on Wednesday, April 22, 2015. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the church. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Brian Roberts officiating. Interment will be at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church’s Cemetery following the service. Susan was born in Michigan City to Lloyd G. Cassler and Joyce J. (Dabbert) Cassler on November 22, 1953. They preceded her in death. She married Dr. Anthony K. Weber, M.D. on June 7, 1980 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Michigan City, who also preceded her in death in 2011. He was a physician (ophthalmologist) who practiced at the Medical Group/Health Partners in Michigan City for 31 years. Susan is survived by her daughters, Suzanne M. Weber and Sarah J. Weber, both of Lake Mary, Florida. She is also survived by her brothers, Daniel M. Cassler, Houston, Texas and Thomas L. (Susan) Cassler, La Porte, Indiana. Susan was extremely intelligent and skipped a grade in elementary school. She graduated from Elston High School in Michigan City in 1971 at the age of 17. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Purdue University North Central in 1975. In 1980, she graduated with a master’s degree in elementary education from Purdue University North Central, where she earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She was the first woman in her family to earn a college degree. Susan also earned a professional/life teaching license from the state of Indiana, which is very difficult to obtain. Susan was a third grade teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in Michigan City. She was much loved by her students, and she was extremely creative and innovative. Susan made all of her own classroom decorations and bulletin boards. A picture of her classroom was even placed in a publication. She created her own curriculum. She taught her students the basics of reading, writing, science, social studies and math. She also taught specialized subjects, such as religion, art, music and physical education. Susan was a tremendous influence on her students and always went the extra mile to help them succeed in the classroom. Later, Susan became a homemaker and a stay-at-home mother for many years. She was very involved in the life of her late husband. Susan worked as an ophthalmic assistant in her husband’s office. She was a trained surgery assistant in Radial Keratotomy. She also conducted specialized visual field tests in his office. Susan was also very much involved in the lives of her daughters. She was a room mother for ten years for her daughters’ classes. She assisted with parties, eighth grade banquets, fundraisers, field trips and other special school celebrations. She was a library aide for five years at Edgewood Elementary School in Michigan City. Susan also worked as a substitute teacher periodically. In addition, she worked as a fourth grade math teacher as a volunteer for a semester. She was a school board member at St. Paul Lutheran School for two years. Also, she was a volunteer teacher for a reading program, which assisted students in writing their own books. Susan created bulletin boards for a local teacher in Michigan City as well. In addition to this, she was an assistant Girl Scout leader. Susan was a faithful and active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Michigan City. She served as a Sunday school teacher there from 1987 – 2010. She was an inspiration to many through her teaching. Susan brought many children to the Christian faith. Susan made Biblical characters come to life for her students, and she taught her students many life lessons. Susan created a beautiful classroom, with a life-sized tree to represent the Garden of Eden. She made a life-sized palace to reinforce the lesson of Queen Esther. She created a large fish to showcase the lesson of Jonah. As a Sunday school teacher, Susan reinforced the lessons with innovative teaching methods. She implemented crafts, games, skits, puppet shows and hands-on activities. Susan was also selected by members of Immanuel to serve as a leader of a Life-Group (Bible study/fellowship) for seven years. At Immanuel, she also organized a free gift sale with Bibles, clothing, food, furniture, toys, etc. for needy citizens in the Michigan City community. Susan made several beautiful Christmas church banners for Christmas Eve services. In addition, she created and constructed a five foot by four foot 100th anniversary book to celebrate Immanuel’s 100th anniversary. After relocating to Florida in 2010, Susan became a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Oviedo. She team taught Sunday school for two years with her daughters at St. Luke’s Church. Recently, she organized an ongoing free Bible giveaway at St. Luke’s for church sponsored events, which included both children’s and adult Bibles. Several hundred free Bibles were distributed to members of the local community. Susan believed that everyone should have access to the Word of God. Susan was active in her community, where she volunteered with the Senior’s Intervention Group. This group assists needy senior citizens in Lake Mary, Florida. She also assisted with organizing materials for a local school supply giveaway in Oviedo. Susan was a devout Christian, who loved God, her late husband and daughters deeply. Evangelism and helping others were of the utmost importance in her life as a Christian. She and her daughters were best friends. She enjoyed helping and serving others. Susan was a selfless, loving, caring and righteous woman. She was compassionate, gentle, kind and extremely wise. Susan was a leader and a server in her church and community. She was a fun-loving person. Susan was a fantastic mother who always put her children first. Her daughters could not have asked for a better mother. She is much loved by her family and will be greatly missed.
