Pebble Beach ~ Dorothy Thomas, 85, of Pebble Beach passed away on Friday, August 24. She was born in Portland, Oregon on February 19, 1927. Dorothy came to California with her parents and family in 1932. Raised in Mill Valley, she attended Old Mill School in Mill Valley, St. Anselm School in San Anselmo and Ursuline Academy in Santa Rosa.
Always adventurous, Dorothy accepted assignments with the U.S. Department of Defense, first in Japan in 1951, and, later, in Libya, Spain, and Pakistan where she met her late husband, Alan Thomas. She lived in Pakistan for seven years where her children were born.
Dorothy and Alan lived in England for ten years until moving to Pebble Beach in 1972 which Dorothy has considered home for the past forty years. She was a member of the Beach & Tennis Club, Monterey Peninsula Country Club, the Monterey Bridge Club and Casa Abrego. A lover of games with a gifted mind and competitive spirit, Dorothy’s special passion was bridge. She enjoyed many hours with friends at cards and achieved Life Master, the most highly sought level of bridge achievement.
An adventurer since her youth, Dorothy traveled throughout her life. Her passports bore entry stamps from over 40 countries. Her journeys introduced her to Prime Ministers, Presidents and dignitaries from many countries.
Dorothy is survived by her beloved and loving family; son and daughter, David and Tricia in Pleasanton; grandchildren, Alexandra and Matthew Rooney and Alan and Evan Thomas and her siblings, Jeanne Brogan, Bob Mayer, Marilynn Neville and Eileen Thiel.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held at Casa Abrego on September 22 at 3:00 p.m. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be sent to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 2511 Garden Road, Suite A250, Monterey, 93940.
