Elizabeth R. Orrett died peacefully at her home. Known to most as Betty, she was born in Oakland, CA to Charles and Polly Gruner as their only child. She graduated from UC Berkeley in 1943, served in the US Navy during WW II, then returned to San Francisco to work with Pan American’s Weather Department where she met her husband, Leyland M. Orrett (1921-2005). They moved to Del Monte Forest in 1953 where Betty raised two sons, was an avid tennis player and swimmer, served as President of the local AAUW, and late in life found the color and drama of flamenco. Betty’s deepest joy came from watercolor painting. Her sense of color was extraordinary, as was her ability to render form and movement with pen and ink. The iconic beauty of the Monterey Peninsula, and some of its lively residents, were boldly reflected in her linework and wash of color. Betty had wonderful friends throughout her life. She is survived by her sons, Edwin (Ned) and Edward, who are grateful for the incredible in-home caregivers who helped make her last years fulfilling. A private memorial is forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Carmel Foundation, P. O. Box 1050, Carmel, CA 93921.
