I'm a past resident of the Lovers Point neighborhood and though I did not know your beautiful Erica, and I'm not known to you, I hope you will feel a small portion of comfort & calm sent here to you and also to your dearest one in my frequent prayers .... that her bravery & new path be filled with light ..... that she enter a Garden of Happiness ..... that she behold Divine Splendors on the loftiest Mount.

I am heartbroken.

I first remember Erica as a bright, shining presence, a student of mine at MIIS in the 1990s. I first met her in a history of Environmentalism course that I taught, but she took every other course I taught, too (Gender and Development classes, mostly). I always had my classes over for dinner at the end of the quarter, and she was a delightful, warm, sweet presence around my dinner table. She was an active listener, interested in everyone and everything, kind and beautifully present.

After she graduated, I often chatted with her at Whole Foods and kept up with her life, her successes in marathons and triathlon events. I always encouraged her to wear a helmet, which she found amusing. She was equally interested in my life, my children, and my grandchildren — we shared photos over the years--and made multiple plans to have lunch or get together, but that never happened--life got in the way. 

After she moved to Elroy's, our chats became longer, leisurely conversations, and our relationship grew closer. We are both swimmers, and she urged me to try ocean swimming. I urged her to try out my pool. Neither of us ever made that happen. We then made concrete plans for lunch, but I got sick. For 6 months. No one could have been more caring or compassionate towards me than Erica. 
I saw her for the last time on Saturday, December 20. Sweet, sweet Erica. She must have hugged me four times that day. She was more than chatty. She didn't want to let go. 

I will miss her forever and always.

Erica was a bright light for me and all the yogis at Rebekah’s Salty Soul Yoga class in Carmel every Wednesday evening. Always ready with an eager smile and an impressive downward dog or Olympian plank, she was humble about her impressive athletic achievements. She’d tell me about her fearless swims to Alcatraz, as though they were a casual 50 yards swim in a community pool.
When we first met, she said, “Hey: You’re my double!” And it’s true, we both had short blond(ish) hair, and a slim build. We even wore similar burgundy tank tops and grey yoga pants. But where she had a rock-solid six-pack, I have a muffin top belly ! Ha!
I’m gutted and can’t quite believe that Erica is not coming back to class, but I will never forget her energy and her spirit will continue to be with each of us to inspire us to live our lives to the fullest and move forward, as she did, with quiet determination and endless courage.

Dear Erica, 

Despite our great sorrow, we are sure, wherever you are, that you are sharing your « joie de vivre », your love for others, your kindness, your honesty, your passion, your courage, your friendship, and your contagious spirit and smile. 

Please, keep smiling from above!

Mon Jean-François,

Sache que nous sommes de tous cœur à tes côtés. Les mots, malheureusement, ne suffisent pas à apaiser les douleurs mais tu sais que tu es entouré et que tu peux compter sur nous. « L’amitié ne consiste pas à se voir tous les jours, mais à savoir que l’on s’aime. » (Hugo).

I met Erica in 1993 in Tokyo when we were 23. I liked her instantly. She sparkled! Her eyes danced! Her smile enveloped everyone within a mile radius! You could feel her joie de vivre and I loved being around her. She always had something uplifting to say. She lived true to her values and yet she accepted others for exactly who they were without judgement. She loved every living thing unconditionally and without prejudice. Erica is a beautiful soul and I know she is, and will always, wrap us in her light. All my love dear Kitsune-chan.

Dear JF,

I was deeply saddened to hear of your wife Erica’s passing and can only begin to imagine the shock and pain you and your family are going through.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. I hope you can find some comfort in the love that surrounds you and in the memories you shared together. If there is any way I can be of support to you or your family during this time, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Under the golden California sky, she found the promise of a new lease on life every morning. At 55, she carried within her the vitality of a life in motion, that of a free, athletic woman deeply in tune with the elements. The Pacific Ocean was not just a body of water to her: it was her refuge, her confidant, her inner world. She dove into it as one enters “oneself” — with calm, respect, and wonder. 
Swimming among the waves, meeting the gaze of a sea creature, feeling the caress of the sun on her salty skin—this was her way of living, of existing fully. In this dance with the sea, she found a rare peace that few know how to achieve: that of those who live without fear, fully present, connected to all living things. 

And then, one day, the sea kept her. A brutal gesture from a world is sometimes indifferent to human fragility. The ocean she loved so much became the silent witness to the tragedy. For days, it rocked her, as if to delay the inevitable, refusing to let her go too quickly. And when it finally returned her body, it also left a message of love and remembrance on the shore: that of a woman whom we will never stop seeing smile between waves during her sporting successes. 
Today, we remembered her as a quiet force, with her gaze turned toward the light. She embodied the simple beauty of authentic beings, those who do not seek to dominate the world, but to live in harmony with it. Her presence shone like a sunset on the Pacific coast: dazzling, soothing, unforgettable.
The ocean, in its infinite mystery, took her, but it cannot take away her memory or the love she sowed around her alongside Jean-François. Her spirit remains in every glimmer of light on the water, in every wave that fades away on the sand.

We were staying with my Mother in Santa Cruz on Christmas and the tornado was intense to say the least. In turn, we knew that the upwelling had potential for bringing back our great friend. The following days were hectic but nothing compares to the beauty that took place when I took this photo the day before she was found .Its powerful that the rainbow meets right at Lovers Point and extends toward Asilomar the same exact locations she was last seen. I felt her embrace, it was too beautiful to miss. I hope this makes others as full as it did us.

Every time we looked at the vast ocean, we thought of Erica and now, more than ever.  Her spirit continues and inspires so many with her love and dedication to everything she did and everyone she encountered.  Erica and Jean Francois are forever in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts.

Erica and I went to grad school together and would occasionally meet to run, relishing in the sun, ocean, and the smell of eucalyptus. Erica was a sweet and positive presence and her smile brightened my grad school days. May she rest in peace. 🕊️

My deepest condolences to the family and their loved ones. Even though I knew Erica for a short period of time, I can say she was a very hardworking and dedicated person. She always seized a moment to smile. Her positivity will always be admired. I will forever remember her joy when she would see me wear colors similar to the Elroy's logo. Je ne connaissais Erica et Jean-François que par les nombreuses évocations de leur engagement sportif commun, via Roland, et des nombreux résultats atteints dans leur discipline. 
Personne remarquable, hors du commun, certainement. 
Puisse Jean-François surmonter ce drame et ne retenir, à terme, que les merveilleux moments.

Je ne connaissais ni Erika ni son mari Jean-François. Ce dernier est toutefois le fils de mes amis Roland et Monique  Vanreusel-Fontaine. Il est évident que dans pareil moment. mon épouse Patricia et moi partageons leur douleur, leur tristesse. Nous sommes conscients que ces quelques mots sont dérisoires mais il me fallait les écrire. J'ai cru comprendre à travers les articles de presse qu'Erika s'en était allée là où elle appréciait le plus de se trouver. C'est à cela aussi qu'il faut penser. À ses parents, son mari, ses beaux -parents, ses amis, je souhaite force et voyage et la lucidité de se souvenir d'elle telle qu'ils l'ont côtoyée tout au long de sa vie.

I did not know Erika, nor her husband Jean-François. He is, however, the son of my friends Roland and Monique Vanreusel-Fontaine.
At such a time, my wife Patricia and I wish to express our deepest sympathy and share in their grief and sorrow. We are aware that words can do little in the face of such loss, yet I felt it was important to offer them.
From the press reports, I understand that Erika passed away in the place she loved most. This thought may also bring some comfort.
To her parents, her husband, her parents-in-law, and her friends, I extend my sincere condolences and wish them strength, courage, and the clarity to remember her as she was known and cherished throughout her life.

A bit more than a year ago we were sitting there in Monterey Bay, during one of the few moments when you were not training or competing.  You are both so driven and dedicated to the sport. We just wanted to invite you to our wedding when we found out about what happened at Lovers Point where we were still all together in May of that year. We will miss that eternal smile of yours, Erica! Jean-Francois - sterkte! We are here for you. Big hug from Maya and me.
