Joseph Elmer Callaway

Joe, a native of Shelbyville, Indiana, graduated from Triton High School, Fairland, in 1963. He enlisted in the Navy in 1964 and was assigned to the USS Oriskany as an Electrician’s Mate. He reenlisted in 1971 and served on the USS Nimitz pre commissioning crew; during his time on board that ship, he advanced in rank to Chief Petty Officer, was selected for Limited Duty Officer, and was commissioned an Ensign, United States Navy, in 1977. He served another 17 years as a commissioned officer, retiring in 1994 at the rank of Commander.

Joe served as a Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey, and supported many community organizations. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, CAPT Rebecca Stone, USN; children Ruth and David of Monterey; children, Joey, Cari, Mike, and Debbie; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 11:00am at the First Presbyterian Church of Monterey.
