Jerry and I had the good fortune to live next door to Karen when we lived in College Terrace near Stanford in the late 80s.  She was such a kind soul and so funny to boot!  In later years, her annual Christmas poems about her pets were always charming and we loved hearing about her adventures with them, even though it had been many years since we’d moved away from CA.  One year, after the big earthquake in 1989 in the Bay Area, Karen left town for an extended trip to Kansas City.  She asked us to keep her silver Persian kitten, Biggie, while she was away.   Naturally, we fell in love with the little guy, and when she returned home and took Biggie back home, I cried  and begged my husband to get us a cat of our own.  In thirty years since, our household has never been without cats.  Karen had that kind of effect on people, making relationships with animals seem both necessary and a stroke of good fortune.  She was such a friend to furry creatures!
      Our sincerest condolences on Karen’s passing.  

Karen and I were graduate students together in the MFA program at Sarah Lawrence in the early '90s. She was witty and wise and a terrific writer. She brought her dog, Nacious, to our Tuesday poetry writing workshop with Thomas Lux. I will miss her splendid e-mails and her annual Christmas card which included a rhyming poem written from the perspective of her pets. She took my brother to lunch during his freshman year at Stanford when he was a bit disoriented and was able to advise him about the math faculty. She was a great friend.
