Marion passed away peacefully in Monterey on August 19, 2021. She was born in Boston on October 19, 1927 to Elton Carroll Moore and Elsie Bull Moore. She attended schools in Boston graduating with honors from Girls' High School, formed in 1852 as Boston Normal School, strictly for young women. Up to that time, any schooling offered for girls at public expense was of a marginal sort. Marion was very proud of her high school's history.
After World War II, Marion and her mother moved to California. Leaving her beloved city was very difficult and she experienced culture shock. The city has always been very close to her heart. She started her career as an elementary school secretary in Santa Cruz at Mission Hill School.
Marion married Leland Petersen in 1951 and moved to Monterey. After the birth of her children, she resumed her career as an elementary school secretary working for the Monterey City School District as it was called then. Her career spanned thirty years ending as secretary at Foothill School.
During their retirement years, she and Leland enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Canada, returning to Boston from time to time.
Marion is survived by her beloved children - Curt Petersen (Barbara) of Burien, WA and Gail Hahs (Andy) of Beaverton, OR and two grandsons, Scott and Tommy Hahs, as well as her cousin, Lois Rogers of Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her parents, her loving husband of 58 years, Leland and her cousin, Carolyn Nisil of Massachusetts.
Marion was a charter member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and worked as a volunteer for the Cancer Society Discovery Shop in Pacific Grove.
A memorial gathering will be held at Casanova Oak Knoll Park on what would have been her 94th birthday, October 19, 2021, 3-6pm.
