Pacific Grove ~ Mary C. Furney passed away peacefully on January 24 surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Aurora, Colorado in 1931, to Colonel Seth and Alma Craft. She and her brother, Don, enjoyed their adventure in a military family. After attending Lowell High School in San Francisco, she went on to graduate from Punahou School in Honolulu in 1949. Mary attended Albion College in Michigan, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega. She was a Sweetheart of Sigma Chi who enchanted Robert Furney, her future husband.
In 1972, Mary came to Fort Ord, in one of their 22 moves as a career military couple. Colonel Robert and Mary Furney fell in love with the Monterey Peninsula and retired to Pacific Grove in 1986.
Mary was passionate about her family and her home, and a loving guardian to her pets. She had a voracious appetite for books and magazines, classic films, and the BBC. She was noted for her quick wit and sense of humor which has been passed down in full force to her loving grandchildren.
Mary joins her parents and brother in eternal life, where in her own words you don't have to cook or clean up, and naps are encouraged.
The family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring staff at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
Mary's life will be celebrated by her loving family: her husband of 60 years, Robert; son, Richard (Kim); daughters, Leslie (Steve) and Ellen (John); grandchildren, Brighid, Heidi, and Kathleen Furney, Laura and Sara Furney-Howe and Mary and Joseph Gaule; her beloved sister-in-law, Sandra Craft; her nephew, Paul; her niece, Mary Sue (Steve) and their children, Robbie, Katie, Maggie, and William.
