1934-2012
Carmel, CA- Suzanne Foley Hewitt passed away peacefully on June 18, 2012 after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her five children, grandchildren, sister and niece who were able to spend the last few weeks with her. Suzanne was a loving, gentle, and thoughtful person and a stable presence in her family’s lives. She was a sharp intellectual who enjoyed reading and discussing current events, and had a clever sense of humor. Suzanne shared a very pragmatic and measured view of life often bestowing the advice to “be flexible”, and to “remember who you are”.
Suzanne was born on February 11, 1934 in Utica, New York to James and Geraldine Foley. She spent much of her free time and holidays on the lakes in Old Forge, NY. She had fond memories of being in the Adirondacks with her family and childhood friends, whether taking rides in the Chris Craft or strolls in town. In later years, Suzanne would return to Old Forge each summer where she felt a deep bond with family and friends.
Suzanne graduated from Utica Free Academy (UFA) in 1951. She attended The College of New Rochelle and later completed her education at Utica College. She was one of the original community ambassadors for the Utica Rotary exchange program and spent a summer program in Austria. It was during that time that she developed a desire to travel and see the world.
While working in New York City, Suzanne met Robert Augur Hewitt Jr. at a West Point dance. Shortly after he graduated from The United States Military Academy in 1956, they were married in Utica, NY.
After 17 years of travel with the military and five children later, the family was transferred to the Monterey Peninsula in 1973. Suzanne taught at Carmel Mission School and was very active in community and educational endeavors. Suzanne liked getting out with her friends for golf, tennis or bridge. While her children were in high school and college, Suzanne made many of their friends feel at home when they visited. She was truly interested in each of their lives and always wanted to learn how each was doing.
Suzanne is survived by her children: Kimberly Aubuchon of Salinas, CA; Michael Hewitt of El Dorado Hills, CA; Cynthia Philip of Rye, NY; Robert Hewitt of Sonoma, CA; and Maria Peakes of Pebble Beach, CA and their spouses; thirteen grandchildren; her sister, Christine (Midge) McCarthy; five nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Jeremiah O. McCarthy; her brother, Michael Foley; and her parents.
Visitation will be held at The Paul Mortuary Chapel on the 9th of July from 4-7 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove on the 10th of July at 11 am. A memorial service will take place at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Old Forge, New York on the 3rd of August.
Suzanne’s family would like to thank the staff at the Cottages of Carmel, Community Caregivers, and Hospice for all of their support and kindness provided during Suzanne’s final days. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 945 S. Main St., Ste. 201, Salinas, CA, 93901.
