Bill was born in Los Angeles, the son of George P. Griffith and Florence Crellin. He attended schools in Beverly Hills. He left the University of Arizona and enlisted in the Navy in February 1943. Bill served two years on the USS Morris DD417, earning nine battle stars for action in the Aleutians, South Pacific, Philippines and Okinawa. In this battle, the ship was hit by a Kamikaze.
Following three years at the University of Colorado, Bill lived in the San Francisco area for two years before settling on the Monterey Peninsula in 1952. After several years as a stockbroker, he trained for and became a certified Alcoholism Counselor for the next twenty years. During this time, he served on the Monterey County Mental Health Advisory Council, the Beacon House Board of Directors and the Suicide Prevention Center Board.
For several years, Bill was also an active member of the Pacheco Club, Corral de Tierra Country Club and Dixieland Monterey. He enjoyed travel, especially to the Mayan ruins.
Bill leaves his wife, Ruth, whom he married in 1973; his daughter, Lyn; Ruth’s daughter, Janice, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his older brothers, George and Crellin and his younger sister, Mary.
