

William (Bill) Hobart Satchell, 91, died peacefully at the home he shared with his son and daughter-in-law Stuart Pearson Satchell and Yvette Lyon Satchell on May 16, 2013. He was born May 24, 1921 in Coalinga, California, the only child of William Hobart Satchell and Emma Vale Satchell. Bill attended Menlo School and Pomona College, where his education was interrupted by WWII. After service in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 he completed his education at Stanford University.
In 1952 he married Gloria McLaren who had lived in Carmel as a small girl and they relocated to join his parents in Carmel in 1953.
Studies in computer science let ultimately to a career with California Test Bureau/McGraw-Hill in Monterey, CA where he worked, with the exception of a four year hiatus in Lexington, MA working for Raytheon Education, until his retirement in 1985.
His was a great mind and he was tireless in his care for others, a genuine, supportive, loving and generous mentor, as well as a playful, irreverent and self-effacing spirit. His love of the land and natural world sustained and brought him peace, and many of us will feel his spirit when visiting Stewart’s Cove, Carmel River Beach or Point Lobos.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Gloria. He is survived by daughter Cynthia V. Satchell of Denver, CO and his sons William H. Satchell, of Alexandria, VA, Ian M. Satchell of Denver, CO and Stuart P. Satchell of Monterey, CA and his grandchildren Michael, Emma and Keagan Satchell.
Arrangements are being made by The Paul Mortuary, with anticipated interment in the El Carmelo Cemetery in Pacific Grove. Plans for a memorial service are in process and will be made available on The Paul Mortuary Website, (www.thepaulmortuary.com) soon.
