Avis Bell Raney, 94, of League City, Texas, passed peacefully into eternal life May 25, 2025. She was born in Freestone County, Texas on June 10, 1930 to Lloyd Luper and Annie Bulin Luper. She was married to Charles L. Raney, her beloved Charlie for 68 years. The day her youngest started kindergarten, Avis began her career in accounting at Houston Natural Gas Company. After 10 years, she closed the Pasadena office then managed the La Porte office another 2 years. From 1980 to 1991, Avis worked at Stauffer Chemical, from where she retired. All this new free time led to her and Charlie taking square dance lessons, which became more than a hobby to them both. Eventually, they served as co-Presidents of the Houston Area Camping Squares, before going on to hold the same office in the Texas State Camping Squares. They camped and danced all over Texas and beyond, making some of the
best friends of their lives.
Avis grew up in Houston, very close to downtown. She went to Johnston Jr. High and was a member of Second Baptist Church before the family moved to the Aldine area. She graduated from Aldine High School in 1949 and kept in touch with some of her classmates all her life. She and Charlie knew of each other as he went to Humble High School, but didn’t meet until he returned from duty in the Army. They married in 1956 and eventually settled their family of 4 in Pasadena, Texas. In 1978 they moved to Deer Park, where they lived in the same house for over 40 years. Avis was preceded in death by her father and mother, Lloyd and Annie Luper, her sisters, Liddell Buxton, Ila May Edwards, Norma Irvin, her brothers, Lloyd Luper Jr., and Floyd Luper, nephew Phillip Hardin, and great niece, Cara Pendleton. She is survived by 2 sisters, Bertha McBride and Catherine Hardin, her husband, Charles Raney, son, Stephen Raney, daughter, Sharon Raney Reed and husband Bruce Reed, granddaughters, Andrea Raney Retzer and her husband John Retzer, Stephanie Reed Haley and her husband Andrew Haley, as well as one grandson Michael Reed. She is also survived by five great grandsons, Dean and Charlie Retzer, Maximilian de Ybarrondo, Remington and Bowen Haley. Many nieces and nephews still lovingly call her aunt AL, a nickname she enjoyed from her school days. Avis was one of the funniest and most giving people one could meet. She was the matriarch of her extended family and known as Grandma Avis to lifelong close friends.
The family would like to thank the exceptional staff from Grand Living at Tuscan Lakes in League City. Rebecca and Stephanie, along with countless caregivers, made her life a beautiful one.
A memorial service will take place Friday June 13, 2025 at 10:00 am at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, followed by a lunch reception, then placement of urn.
