David Clayton Hicks was born March 4, 1948 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Clayton and Ruth Dunn Hicks. His father Clayton was a Union Plumber and his mother Ruth was a school secretary. The family moved to Fremont, California where all the children attended school. David was the oldest of the four children.
David graduated from Irvington High School as class president in 1966. David earned his bachelor's degree from the University of California at Hayward. He moved to Texas and earned his master's degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches. In 1982 he earned his doctorate degree from the University of Houston.
David's career took him from teacher, diagnostician, special education director and to superintendent of schools.
He married Susan Frederick in 1980 in Lake Jackson, Texas. To this marriage three children were born, Joseph, Jodi and Meredith.
David served as superintendant of Deer Park schools from 1993-2004. He taught administrative classes at the University of Houston-Clear Lake from 1984 until recently.
He is survived by his wife, Susan of Deer Park; son, Joseph and his wife Amanda of San Antonio; daughters, Jodi of Austin and Meredith of College Station; his beloved dog Layla; mother in law, Edith Frederick; brother, Bob Hicks and his wife Debbie and their two children of Sonora, California; sister, Peggy Rothenburger and her husband Craig and their two daughters of Dana Point, California; sister, Dr. Jeannie Smoot and her husband Todd and their two children of Sonoma, California.
Visitation will be Monday, November 29, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at Deer Park United Methodist Church-1300 East 13th Street Deer Park, TX 77536. Funeral services will take place at Deer Park United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m., officiated by Reverend Deborah Proctor, Melanie Kraas, and Sam Schaal. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Deer Park Educational Foundation.
