Floy Jean Lucas was born in Ward, Arkansas on November 5, 1929 to Madie Francis Stephens and Elias Edmonds Stephens. An overachiever from the beginning, Jean graduated high school at age 15 and college at the age of 17. She immediately began her lifelong career of educating children. An accomplished musician, Jean taught piano lessons and played beautiful organ music at various churches throughout her lifetime.
She married Leon (Pete) Lucas in 1967 and they remained committed to one another for the next 52 years. Four children, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren kept them busy, but not too busy to commit time to supporting their church, the Masons and Eastern Star. Jean was a member of First Baptist Church of Pasadena and was a member of Eastern Star for almost 50 years.
After 47 years of teaching and counseling, 25 of which were in the Pasadena Independent School District, Jean retired in 1995. She and Pete made the best of retirement by traveling the United States. They loved exploring Air Force bases, western train rides, and searching for snow. They also traveled to sporting events, graduations, and weddings for their grandchildren, loving nothing more than spending time with their family.
Committed to their faith, their family, and their friends, more than anything, Jean loved Pete and he loved her. The two of them reunited in their Heavenly home on June 22, 2019. What a celebration there must have been.
Jean is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Sandy Childress of Apple Valley, CA; Jerry and Diane Childress of Irving, TX and Randy and Cindy Lucas of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Larry and Wendi Childress; Christopher and Shawn Childress, Denise Synatschk, Matt and Emily Lucas; Kathryn Lucas and Andrew McKellips. Great grandchildren are Harrison Childress, Gabriella Childress, Devon Childress, Brooke Childress, Zachary Childress, Tyler Synatschk, Emily Synatschk, Kaitlyn Synatschk, Piper Childress, and Lucille Childress. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, LuRena Lucas, her granddaughter, Christina Childress, and Pete.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be conducted by Dr. Charles Redmond on Saturday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel at Grand View Funeral Home, 8501 Spencer Highway, Pasadena,TX.
