Max was born on November 8, 1934, in Hemphill, TX to Herman B. and Emma McClemore Cammack. After graduating from Hemphill High School, Max enlisted in the US Army as a Specialist Third Class eventually rising to the rank of corporal. After his years of service in Paris, France post-Korean War, he attended both Lamar University and Stephen F. Austin State University. He married his wife, Bobbie while at Stephen F Austin State University. They later moved to Houston, TX where Max began his career in accounting and then opened several rental equipment businesses in Texas, Louisiana and Florida, two of which are still in operation.
Max found his life’s passion and purpose in his professional work and serving in his church. Max was a decades long member of Golden Acres Baptist Church in Pasadena, TX (New Day Church) where he served in the children’s ministries and also served as a deacon. He was a complex man. On one hand he could be reserved, quiet, shy, contemplative and a man of few words. On the other hand, when in his work element where he was more comfortable, he was inviting, loved to laugh and was talkative. He will be remembered as someone who was warm, generous to his employees, family and to his church. Max’s reputation in the business community was one of being a visionary and dedicated and committed to his employees. He was known as being loyal to a fault. In addition, he had an uncanny ability to remember numbers and figures and dates.
He spent most of his time at the office or the shop. When was not there, he enjoyed the Houston Oilers, Texans, and especially Texas Longhorns football. Max was also a fan of old classic country music and enjoyed a good meal. He liked to travel when he could, often looking for equipment deals and visiting his East Texas roots. He looked forward to spending time with his beloved extended family, especially during holidays and family gatherings.
Max will be deeply missed by his daughter, Retta Cammack Jones and husband Tommy Jones of Pasadena, TX; two granddaughters, Heather Cook and husband Daiki Mori of Sendai, Japan and Holly Cook and fiancé, Zachary Head of Los Angeles, California; two bonus grandsons, Joshua Jones and wife Heather and Jonathan Jones of Houston, TX; along with 13 nieces and nephews and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 62 years, Bobbie Barrett Cammack; his sisters Charlcye Cammack Barrett and husband Billy, and Gaye Cammack VanValkenburg and husband Jerry.
