Roy G. Escareno Sr., age 84, of LaPorte, Texas, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday morning, November 22, 2023, with his son, Neil Escareno Sr, and wife Deidre by his side at the Methodist Hospital Clear Lake, in Webster, Texas. He was a beloved father and grandfather, a respected minister, who served the Lord until his last breath. He was born on July 9, 1939, in Luling, Texas, to Abraham Escareno and Antonia Guerrero Escareno. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, by his loving wife of 65 years, Evangelina H. Escareno and sons Roy Escareno Jr. and David H. Escareno. Roy is survived by his children, Diane Escareno Zamora (Guadalupe), Abraham Escareno Sr., Vivian Escareno Longoria (Ricardo) Cynthia R. Escareno, Neil E. Escareno Sr. (Deidre) and William G. Escareno (Mary), along with 39 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren. He also leaves behind two brothers Abraham Escareno and Faustino Escareno and a sister Maruca Mendoza, along with numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by brothers Jesus Escareno, Lorenzo Escareno and Sister Victoria Smith.
Roy was a man of God, an ordained minister who dedicated his life to helping others find their way to the Lord, a true beacon of hope and love during these troubled times. He began his journey as a part-time disc jockey for KJIC 90.5 FM, a Christian radio station in Pasadena, Texas. He and his wife Eva then founded Juntos Venceremos (Together we Overcome) which was heard on KFTG Radio Aleluia 88.1 FM station, and seen on Television station KLTJ in Webster, Texas. His favorite scriptures were, “For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believed in him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 and “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, oh Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14. Roy never passed up an opportunity to witness to others about Christ and the message of salvation. He had a special calling on his life and was not ashamed to express his belief and love of Christ and his story of how Christ changed him from one day to the next. “Choose you this day whom ye will serve...but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
Roy retired from Aire Liquide in Pasadena, Texas after many years in the Petro-Chemical Industry, as an Industrial Warehouse Specialist and Delivery Driver of Compressed Gases until his retirement. He also worked for other Petro-Chemical companies in the Pasadena/Bayport area and for A&B Auto Electric in Houston, Texas. He proudly attained his high school diploma later in life and always encouraged his children to pursue their education and their dreams-for with God, nothing is impossible. His children and grandchildren have achieved Advanced Degrees in Business, Human Resources, Economics, Petro-Chemical, Nursing, Writing, Humanities and Medical fields due to his example and support. He sacrificed all, so that he could provide the best for his family and children. “But if any provide not for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.” 1 Timothy 5:8
His love for his family was unconditional and unwavering, no matter what challenges he faced- his faith in God never wavered. We were blessed to have a father who loved us and prayed God’s protection and covering over us. His prayers are forever stayed before the throne of God! He and Eva were long time members of La Iglesia del Pueblo and served as Sunday School teachers for children and teens. They taught about the love of God, salvation through Christ and how to live for Christ. They planted seeds in innocent hearts that even if dormant, one day would bloom and be a beacon to return home. “Raise a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
While we mourn the loss of his earthly vessel, we are comforted with the knowledge that we will see him again: for to live is Christ and to die is to gain (to be in the presence of Christ). Our chain is growing in heaven, our hope and love is eternal. Our father fought the good fight, he kept his faith and finished his race. He is with our Lord and is now reunited with our mother, his lifelong partner and love of his life. “Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God has given you.” Exodus 20:12.
We are comforted in knowing that our father, daddy, grandpa's first words he heard at heaven's gate was: "His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." Matthew 25:21
