Viola "Ruth" Fleming, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 14, 2010. She was born August 3, 1915 in Sealy, Texas to Lydia Mata Ehlert and William August Sommermeyer. Ruth grew up in Fairbanks, Texas.
On December 29, 1935, Ruth married Paul Fleming, and in 1937 they settled in Pasadena, Texas where they raised their family. As an active member of Golden Acres Baptist Church for more than 50 years, Ruth served as a Sunday School teacher. She recalled over the years the joy of watching her students grow into young women and men who eventually brought their children to church at Golden Acres. Ruth served on the pastoral search committee that appointed Dr. Royce Measures, who pastored the church for 20 years.
One of her greatest loves and gifts was sewing. Ruth not only sewed for family, but offered her talents wherever there was a need. Well into her 80's, she sewed countless dresses and baby blankets which were given as gifts and distributed to charity hospitals and underprivileged children.
The family wishes to acknowledge the love and devotion of Ruth's caregivers through the years. Each became an integral part of her life. Our heartfelt thanks to you.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 55 years, Paul. She is survived by daughter Sandra Wilson; sons David Fleming, and wife, Cathy, and Kenneth Fleming, and wife, Jane; grandchildren, Michael Prothro, Rhonda Prothro Skyles, Scott Fleming, Todd Fleming, Craig Fleming and Wendy Fleming Davis; great-grandchildren Jaret, Jaden, and Jack Prothro; Joshua, Jacob and Julia Skyles; Abigail, Jeremy, and Justin Fleming; and AJ Davis.
The family will receive friends Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Grand View Funeral Home.
