

Berta Schupbach, age 92, of Louisville, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 after a joyful life full of family, friends, and travel. She was born April 17, 1929 in Uruapan, Michoacán, Mexico, to Braulio Cazares and Maria Elvira Barbosa. She is survived by her sister Victoria Alvarez de Campos (Tirso) and her brother Alfredo Alvarez (Sofia); by her stepdaughters, Rebecca Schupbach, (Jeff Baugher), Theresa Schupbach-Gordon (Toby Gordon), Christine Schupbach and their children; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Harold J. Schupbach; her sister Amalia Alvarez de Sanchez Mejorada; two brothers, Fernando Alvarez and Carlos Alvarez; and her first husband, Carl Blaskowsky.
Bertha spoke five languages and taught English in Mexico and Spanish in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While living in Mexico, she volunteered and was a supporter for an assist living facility known as Asilo de Ancianos La Providencia. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States. She was a world traveler, taking trips to Mexico Europe, China, Canada and in many parts of the United States. She met her husband, Harold Schupbach when they were both traveling in Spain with separate tour groups. Berta arranged to join the other tour for the day and sat in the only vacant seat on the tour bus, which happened to be next to Harold.
Berta loved classical music and art. She enjoyed attending concerts and taking classes at the University of Louisville, earning her second Master's degree as a Donovan Scholar. She had many kind of devoted friends with whom she enjoyed lively discussions about books and travel. She was raised in the Catholic faith throughout her life.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the compassionate and skilled care she received at The Altenheim and from Hosparus of Louisville. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Berta will be held at St. Brigid Catholic Church, 1520 Hepburn Ave., Louisville at 3:00pm on Wednesday, October 27, 2021. Family, friends and caregivers are welcomed.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Berta on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 10:00am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan, Texas with her burial scheduled to follow at 11:00am at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr, Texas. Funeraria Del Angel Palm Valley have been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
