2025, surrounded by the love and presence of his family.
Born on June 20, 1969, in Edinburg, Mel was a cherished son, a devoted brother, and a proud uncle whose life was deeply interwoven with the joy of his nieces and nephews. To them, he was affectionately known as “Uncle Cookie” and “Uncle Mel,” nicknames that captured his playful spirit and gentle heart.
Mel graduated from PSJA High School in 1987, where he was a dedicated member of the Mighty Bear Band from 1984 to 1987. His musical talent, especially his mastery of the baritone and euphonium, earned him recognition in the All Valley Band as well as at various TMEA regional and state competitions. His love of music was a defining thread throughout his life—an expression of his creativity, discipline, and passion. In 2003, Mel earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas–Pan American. His time in school reflected his commitment to growth, learning, and meaningful accomplishment. Mel was employed as a Policy Manager at Valley Land Title in McAllen.
Mel will be remembered for many things—his sharp wit, his warm sense of humor, and his gift for turning even ordinary moments into laughter. He had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, was an avid supporter of pet charities, found peace in gardening and nurturing life in small, joyful ways. His Sunday afternoons were often spent exploring new restaurants and sharing meals with his mother, a tradition that brought him tremendous happiness. A true local “foodie,” Mel delighted in discovering flavors and supporting local restaurants and the community he loved.
To those who knew him, Mel was a source of light, kindness, and fun. His presence filled gatherings with warmth, and his love for his family was unwavering. His memory will be carried forward in the hearts of family and friends and those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Mel is survived by his mother, Clara B. Casas, his sisters, Marilyn (Carlos) De Luna, Sandra (Bob) Garcia, Rosie (Carlos) Perez, nieces & nephews: Jonathan (Daniella) De Luna & family, Christopher (Mindy) De Luna, Dr. Brandon De Luna, Dr. Evan (Aniella) Perez & family, Bobby Garcia, Jr., Zachary C.
