Refugio was born on August 4, 1934 to Adolfo Medina and Maria Del Jesus Medina Delgado in Durango, Mexico. He was a lifelong resident of Pharr, Texas.
Refugio married the love of his life, Julia, 63 years ago, on May 12, 1962. Together they raised seven children. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Refugio was a skilled and hardworking man, a master at his construction trade. He instilled in his children the importance of learning to work hard and do things for themselves so that they would not have to depend on others. He was a good provider, who always made sure his wife and children were well cared for. He enjoyed traveling with his family all over the United States including Hawaii, but he particularly enjoyed going to Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, to visit his mother and sisters with their families. Refugio loved celebrating Mother’s Day, on that day and any other day he would bring flowers to his wife. He showed gratitude and love to the woman who gave him the greatest blessing a man can have, that of being a father. He had a great sense of humor. As a grandfather, everyone loved his exceptional way of coming up with the most special and unique nicknames for his grandkids. So much so, that sometimes, even close friends would ask him to nickname their babies. Music, family gatherings and special occasions brought him great joy. He loved socializing with friends and family. He was very hospitable, always opening his home and welcoming everyone from the local congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. His inviting hospitality and friendly spirit will be deeply missed by all his family and friends who knew him well.
Refugio is survived by his wife of 63 years, Julia Medina; his seven children, Maria Antonia Izaguirre, Ines (Abel) Quintero, Carlos (Estela) Medina, Lucia (Sakae) Ito, Cynthia Medina, Antonio Medina, and Benito (Claudia) Medina; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Maria Medina; and numerous extended family and friends.
