

August "Gus" Salvo was born in Hell's Kitchen in New York City. He was the son of Italian immigrant parents and was a man who exemplified the greatest generation this country has ever known. He served his country in World War II on the destroyer USS Bagley in the South Pacific. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, confidant, and friend. Gus loved life and was active at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center for 36 years. He played tennis for many years and was still an expert Lawn Bowler and Bocce Ball player at age 98. He called Ahwatukee his "Heaven on Earth". Gus is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita Salvo; his son Joseph Salvo, daughter in law Susan Salvo, grandchildren Billy Salvo, Dana Salvo, and Christopher Salvo; and his daughter Barbara Salvo, son-in-law Bill Mabry and grand dog Cooper Mabry. A Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 10:00am at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 3550 East Knox Road in Ahwatukee followed by interment at The National Memorial Cemetery in Cave Creek. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 from 3:00 to 5:00pm at the Ahwatukee Recreation Center. Arrangements entrusted to Resthaven/Carr-Tenney Mortuary & Memorial Gardens. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, individuals may make a donation to the Ahwatukee Recreation Center.
