David Hernandez, affectionately known as “El Hare” and proudly called the “HCIC” (Head Chicano in Charge), passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, at the age of 63. Born in Tempe, Arizona, on September 4, 1961, David was a man of warmth, simplicity, and humor. He lived life with a down-to-earth attitude and a big heart, making him beloved by all who knew him.
David had a deep love for Arizona sports, from the Phoenix Suns to Arizona State University and the Arizona Cardinals. As a season ticket holder, he spent many Sundays tailgating with family and friends, making each game day an event filled with fun and laughter. His passion for his home teams was infectious, and he made every moment spent cheering for them a memorable one.
Known for his sharp sense of humor, David could always be counted on to tell a good joke, share a laugh, or brighten your day with his quick wit. His love for laughter extended to his favorite childhood cartoon, Bugs Bunny, whose mischievous spirit mirrored David’s own playful nature. Whether quoting Bugs’ iconic lines or just enjoying his cartoons, David’s love for the classic character was something he shared with those around him, often with a chuckle.
Above all, David was a family man. He cherished his role as a father and grandfather, especially his special bond with his 4-year-old grandson, Justice, who lovingly called him “Tata Buddy.” David’s family was his world, and his legacy of love, kindness, and humor will live on in their hearts forever.
Visitation will be held February 4, 2025, from 9:45am to 10:45am with Funeral Mass at 11:00am located at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Graveside service at 12:30pm at Resthaven Carr/Tenney Memorial Gardens and a celebration of his life following the Graveside at Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Rest in peace, David. The HCIC, the lover of Bugs Bunny, and the man who knew how to make everyone laugh will never be forgotten.
