

100, a longtime resident of Tempe, was born March 26, 1910 in Cuba, Kansas, passed away on January 9, 2011. She was the daughter of Elmer and Albena Peters. Gladys retired as an elementary school teacher of 35 years after teaching at several schools including Casa Grande Elementary Schools, Payne Training School at ASU and Broadmor School in Tempe. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by a sister, Helen Hammond of Arkansas; two daughters, Calene Richard of Tempe and Vivian (John) Morrison of Maine; son Eldon (Nadine) Smith of Tempe; five grandchildren David Richard Jr., William Richard, Thomas Richard, Garrett Smith and James Morrison; several nieces and nephews. Her husband Cale C. Smith whom she married in 1935, passed away in 1976. After retirement in 1975, she volunteered at the gift shop at Tempe St. Luke’s Hospital and was also an avid bridge club player. She also was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Tempe Women’s Club. Visitation will be held 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, January 14, 2011 in the Stateroom at East Resthaven Park Mortuary, 4310 E. Southern Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85042 (west of 48th St. on Southern). A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Heart Association.
