Edward Barnett Steinmetz

Edward Barnett "Barney" Steinmetz passed away on April 15, 2025, his 88th birthday. He was born in 1937 in Philadelphia, PA and raised in Elkins Park, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Risbrough & Irene Barnett Steinmetz, and brother, William Alfred Steinmetz.

Barney found his career as a hotelier while working summers at the Alvin Hotel in Ocean City, NJ. Following graduation from Cheltenham High School and service in the U.S. Army, he started at the Hotel Del Coronado in California. He later rose to manage several hotels including The Warwick and The Latham in Philadelphia; where he was an active member of the Greater Philadelphia Hotel Association, and Ocean Key House in Key West, FL.

Barney was a born raconteur and affable fellow who could always be counted on for amusing tales at family gatherings, dinner parties, bars & lounges, etc. He loved to entertain, enjoyed having an audience, and had a unique sense of humor and quick wit. Barney was an avid reader who liked to start his day with the New York Times and any other publication he could find. He enjoyed Broadway shows, the Hamptons, travel and country music. From an early age he had an eye for interior design and gardening, often providing input to family and friends. Barney also found relaxation working on his various projects, including his large post card, ephemera, and book collections.

Barney retired in Water Mill, NY, before heading south. He spent his final years enjoying the sunshine and relaxing by the beach in south Florida. In true fashion, on his 88th birthday, he departed this world on the same day he entered. Barney will be remembered with love by his longtime, devoted friend Richard Lauriello of Pompano Beach, FL, cousins Ruth DeCou of Philadelphia; Elisabeth Kachline of Anchorage, AK; Frankie Renner of Reading, PA, and many friends. He was loved and admired by so many and will be dearly missed.
