

SHINE, John died on the morning of January 9, 2012 from complications including pneumonia following surgery in August. John was born on February 11, 1928 in New Albany, Indiana to Nancy McClure and Raymond Shine. He was the eldest of three children and adored his sister Shirley Dyer and his brother, now deceased, Gerald. He graduated from New Albany High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves and was subsequently called to active duty in March 1946. Following basic training he completed six months of study at the West Point Preparatory School prior to admittance to the U.S. Military Academy with the class of 1951. John completed the academic curriculum at West Point with excellent grades and was honorably discharged from the Army on June 1, 1951. He entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology that Fall and graduated in 1953 with degrees in both engineering and economics. Following graduation from M.I.T. John was employed by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors and worked his way up to the position of Manager of Plant Engineering at the Tarrytown, NY manufacturing plant. It was during this time that he met and married Thelma Clifford. They had one child, Gerald, and were later divorced. John subsequently joined an International painting contracting firm, the Kite Company. He moved to Belgium where he was manager of their European operations. After retirement he moved back to Louisville and then in the 1980’s moved to Florida for the warm weather and relaxation with his many friends. He was an active member of American Legion Post 0142 in Pompano Beach and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge 1898 in Pompano Beach. John is survived by his son Gerald Shine and his wife Daisey Scott Shine, his grandson Zek and his sister Shirley Dyer and her husband Pat. John will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. May he rest in peace. A Memorial Service will be held at the American Legion Post 0142 in Pompano Beach at 11:00 am on January 28, 2012.
