Lois was born on April 16, 1928 in Calumet, Alabama; 1 of 6 children (Helen, Albert, Edward, Sonny, and Jack). Lois married the late Joel Houston Duncan in 1947 and they had 3 children together, Rebecca Joan, Donna Gail and Patricia Ann. She later remarried the late Earl Crow in 1963.
Lois was an extremely hard worker, as anyone who knows her can attest to. She loved to do a great job at whatever task she was assigned to and took such pride in her professionalism and perfectionism. From waitressing to cake decorating, from banking to secretary work, she dedicated herself to her job and doing the best she could possibly do.
Although she started working very young, it was her work at Bing’s Bakery and Gourmet Shop that truly started her career. While raising her children in Newark, Delaware, Lois worked as an Operations Manager for Bing’s. In her spare time, she also piped trays of roses for the bakery. Lois dedicated 17 years of service to Bing’s Bakery until 1980 when she relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida to be closer to her brother Jack and his family. She continued to work hard as an employee for Barnett Bank and part-time at Sears & Roebuck. Throughout the years at Barnett, she held many positions and ultimately retired in 1993 having worked there for 12 years. During her time as an employee she achieved many milestones and was awarded many honors for her hard work. She was extremely loved by her co-workers and customers. Upon her retirement from Barnett, the company choose to also retire her teller number.
Her strong work ethic would not let her sit ideal for long and she soon began working part-time on the weekends at Kraeer Funeral Home. Over the next 26 years, she worked at both the Boca Raton and Sample Road offices until recently when she decided to take a leave of absence. During her time at Kraeer, Lois touched many lives. Her love and warmth made a difficult time a lot easier for many families. Yet one of the biggest impacts she made at Kraeer was her implementation and management of the Lotto pool because each week was the week that they were going to “hit it big!”
When she wasn’t working, Lois loved to read stacks and stacks of books and watch her stories. She also loved to play Sunday Bingo, Spider Solitaire and FreeCell at the house. But above all us, she loved to be with her family. Lois put her family first and raised her children to do the same! She was always “happy and content” and never wanting because she had love.
Lois is survived by her children (Rebecca Joan Scott, Donna Gail Swan and Patricia Ann Coulson), her grandchildren (Valerie Scott Beste, Tammie Scott Burnette, Bradley Swann, Crystal Swann, Gregory Swann, Kelly Coulson, George Coulson II, and Katherine Coulson), her great-grandchildren (James Alexander Beste and Cara Swan) and her two dogs (Stumpy “Baby”, and Dino).
Lois was the rock of her family and was very special to all who knew and loved her. Her love was pure and unconditional. Works cannot describe how deeply she will be missed. Lois was fearless, brave and strong. She was a feisty fighter for what was right and honest to the core.
In heaven, Lois now joins her parents (Albert Edward Burke and Gertrude Burke Elliott), her siblings (Helen Voragel, Albert “Brother” Burke Jr., Edward “Bitsey” Burke, Sonny Burke, and Jack Burke), her granddaughter (Jennifer Swan) and many of her dear friends.
A private family viewing is being held on Sunday May 13th at 10:00am at Kraeer Funeral Home in Pompano Beach, Florida.
